We are less than a week away from the start of the new NFL season!

Adam Martin has been with us all summer, offering season previews across the divisions and big awards.

Next week he brings his Superbowl preview to Free Bets, before starting his weekly tips with Thursday Night Football.

Its time to look at the biggest pre-season award and work out who is going to be the MVP. To win this award means that you are the best player in the league for that season.

Here we go through the main candidates, a few big price contenders and who we are betting on.

NFL MVP Award: The Main Contenders

Both Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson are top of this NFL betting market with 6/1 being the top price thatโ€™s available. Allen won the award last year for the first time and Jackson is a two-time winner.

Josh Allen has got another great chance of bringing home the trophy. The Bills have got a nice strength of schedule with the 5th easiest in the league. Given the talent that the Bills have on their team getting the number one seed in the AFC is achievable.

Allen passed for 3,731 yards and 28 touchdowns last season. On top of that he managed to rush for an extra 531 yards and 12 touchdowns. Getting the number one seed in the AFC and producing them numbers again is possible and the reason why he is joint favourite.

Another team that will be trying for the number one seed in the AFC are the Baltimore Ravens and Lamar Jackson. The two-time MVP winner was unlucky not to win this award for a third time last season.

Jackson passed for 4,172 yards and 41 touchdowns. On top of that he rushed for another 915 yards and four touchdowns. Another stat that showed how great a season Jackson had was that he passed for 8.8 yards per attempt. A huge number that showed how good he was at big passing plays, most likely for touchdowns.

The strength of schedule for the Ravens is 10th hardest, which is a big difference to the Bills. This is mainly because they are in a much tougher division. Given that both Allen and Jackson are the same price it would make more sense to edge towards Allen.

Next up in the betting is the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes at a top price of 15/2. Mahomes is always near the top of these markets, but he had a disappointing year statistically last season.

He passed for 3,928 yards and 26 touchdowns. That might sound decent but that was nearly 1,000 yards shorter than Joe Burrow. He also rushed for 307 yards and two more touchdowns. Them stats meant he finished as the 11th best quarterback, which isnโ€™t going to get you the win.

The Chiefs were not a particularly attacking team last season and just did enough to win all the time. This year there is hope that the offence might get back to being more explosive, especially with Rashee Rice, Mahomes number one wide receiver fit again.

Number four in the betting is Cincinnati Bengals star quarterback Joe Burrow. The best odds you can get for him is 9/1 currently. Burrow has shown during his time in the NFL that he is one of the best quarterbacks in the game and another top season is expected.

Last season he passed for 4,918 yards and 43 touchdowns. On top of that he rushed for 201 yards and a further two touchdowns. These numbers are MVP calibre; however, last season did not go as well as the Bengals had hoped.

They finished the season 9-8 which meant they missed out on the playoffs. The defence was poor last season, and they donโ€™t look to have improved enough. The fact is Burrow can pass for as many yards and touchdowns as he wants. If the team doesnโ€™t get to the bigger games in the playoffs, he probably wonโ€™t win it.

The final contender rounding out the top five is Washington Commanders quarterback, Jayden Daniels. It was a stunning rookie season for Daniels and the hope is that he can build on it.

He threw for 3,568 yards and 25 touchdowns with a 69 percent pass completion rate. He then rushed for an extra 891 yards and six touchdowns. To be that composed and have the ability to put them numbers up in a rookie year is impressive.

A top price of 11/1 is a fair price as it will be tough for him to improve on what he has done before.

Why is Last Years Superbowl Winning QB Such a Big Price?

Jalen Hurts is available at a juicy 20/1. Last years Superbowl winning quarterback is clearly a very good player but there are reasons why you shouldnโ€™t back him.

Firstly, if you look at his stats from last year he only passed for 2,903 yards and 18 touchdowns. That is a long way off the likes of Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson who sit top of the market.

Fans of Hurts will argue that he did rush 630 yards and 14 touchdowns. However, a lot of them touchdowns come from the โ€œtush pushโ€ play which, maybe unfairly, gives the credit to the team rather than the quarterback. The narrative for the Eagles is that the team gets them over the line, not Hurts.

Next Best Lamar Jackson @ 6/1

Itโ€™s not the most exciting pick in the world but Lamar Jackson does have a good chance of winning this. With his rushing ability and passing accuracy he really is a quarterback that can do it all. To be able to pass for over 4,000 yards and 40 touchdowns is impressive and he can do that again.

The team is in a good spot now with a playoff run a definite and a trip to at least the AFC Championship game expected. This team is going for the Superbowl and anything else will be a disappointment. If they do what they did last year, then Jackson will have a good chance at winning this.

Top Tip - Josh Allen @ 6/1

Again, itโ€™s not the most exciting pick but it would be shocking if Allen wasnโ€™t competing for this award at the end of the season. His stats last year were amazing, and he can do that again.

The Bills have got a nice schedule that should mean they will be a playoff team and likely the number one seed in the AFC for them. At 6/1 itโ€™s not the biggest price in the world but itโ€™s the right bet for this market.
