QPR v Plymouth Match Preview
At the end of last season, QPR and Plymouth were celebrating their survival after being placed in one of the more brutal Championship relegation battles of the past few years and with as many as 10 teams being in the mix for demotion at one stage, nobody wanted to be one of the worst three.
However, those celebrations would quickly turn into preparations for both outfits and just as one second tier season comes to a close, another war of Championship attrition plunges 24 more teams into battle.
46 separate battles for those who do not manage to enter the play-offs and on the evidence of what both QPR and Plymouth have offered in the opening couple of weeks, an extension to their spring schedule is not something they are likely to be worrying about.
Of course, it is far too early to make any sweeping conclusions after just two fixture rounds being completed but considering neither the R’s nor the Pilgrims have won a league game between them, backing them for top six finishes may be seen as something as a leap of faith.
The two meet in West London on Saturday and each have one point from the first six on offer. Coincidentally, QPR and Plymouth both picked up league draws last weekend to follow opening weekend reverses.
For hosts QPR, their 2-2 draw at Sheffield United will have felt more akin to victory. With Marti Cienfuentes’ men being reduced to 10, it needed a late Lyndon Dykes goal to restore parity at Bramall Lane.
While visitors Plymouth had to make do with sharing the points at Home Park. Wayne Rooney’s men could not make best use of home advantage against Hull last Saturday and instead Ibrahim Cissoko’s opener was soon wiped out by Lewie Coyle’s equaliser.
Disappointment for Rooney and his players, but nowhere near as bad as the trip to Hillsborough the weekend before. A 4-0 reverse further damaging the stock of the man who damaged Birmingham’s Championship status last season.
Then again, there has been a glimmer of hope for Plymouth and Rooney and that came in the Carabao Cup First Round. A comfortable home win at the expense of Cheltenham now means a trip to divisional counterparts Watford in midweek.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with neither side yet to find that winning feeling in the league, I think the first 45 minutes are going to be rather cagey. Therefore, I am backing 0-0 at the interval at odds of 9/4.
In addition to this, I am going to opt for Plymouth to come out on top at the final whistle and if we lean into the opening tip, there is some value to be found. Half-time stalemate, full-time away win and this one is priced at a rather tempting 9/1.
