RB Leipzig v Liverpool Match Preview
It has not quite been the perfect start in terms of the Premier League but still good enough to sit at the top of it after eight weeks of the season and the reason that Liverpool stay top after the weekend is due to their 2-1 home win over Chelsea.
One that saw Liverpool dominate the opening 45 minutes but only go into the break with a goal advantage after Mo Salah’s first half penalty and at one stage it looked as if Chelsea were going to punish them for not taking all their early chances.
A Nicolas Jackson strike soon after the restart would turn the game on its head, a goal from Curtis Jones not long after would turn its game back on its side and Liverpool would hold out to be the winning side at full time.
While Arne Slot’s men have had that winning feeling in both of their Champions League exploits at the start of the season and each of those victories have come at the expense of Italian-based opposition.
A Matchday 1 trip to the San Siro saw AC Milan take the lead early through Christian Pulisic and if his third-minute finish was meant to unsettle the travelling Merseyside men, it only served as an ignition spark.
Three unanswered goals to follow after the interval saw the Anfield outfit go up through the gears to earn maximum points and although their win over Bologna just a couple of weeks later was not as impressive, the 2-0 home win was still good for the same maximum points payout.
They have made a perfect start and are one of seven clubs to have done so as we head into Matchday 3, if they have been at the top of their game in Europe upcoming opponents Leipzig have been the complete opposite.
Marco Rose’s men have got off to a rather thorny start in this season’s Champions League, defeat at Atletico Madrid on Matchday 1 would not have been the biggest surprise but losing to 10-man Juventus when 2-1 up on Matchday 2 would certainly have been a bitter pill to swallow.
Now though the Red Bull-backed outfit will look to tap into their domestic form and form that sees them only off the top spot in the Bundesliga to Bayern Munich by virtue of goal difference. The weekend saw them earn success at Mainz, but will their midweek European clash give them wins?
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and although Liverpool are the favourites, their defence has had a dent in its armour recently. Only two clean sheets from their last four in the league and conceding in Milan suggest to me that this one ends in an away win and both teams scoring at 21/10.
In addition to this, I think a correct score shot offers the right balance between risk and reward on Wednesday. With that in mind and leaning into the tip above, I think a 3-1 away win at odds of 14/1 provides enough for those wanting to strike from long range.
