The Olympic Games in Paris officially begin on Friday night with the opening ceremony, but there’s some sports action before that, with both the rugby seven and the football events getting underway on Wednesday.
For the men, the rugby sevens tournament will take place across Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, and when the winner takes gold, it will be one of the first gold medals awarded of the games.

Rugby Sevens Olympic Format
12 men’s teams will take part in the Paris 2024 rugby sevens event.
The men will play their group games and quarter finals on Wednesday and Thursday, before the official start of the Olympics, and then the final games will be played on Saturday, day one inside the official Olympic event, and here we will see who wins the gold medal.
Three pool’s each with four teams, will start things off before we go into a knockout round, where the top eight teams will play in quarter finals, followed by semi finals and at the end, the final.
Final games will determine every single position, so at the end of the tournament, the 12 teams will be ranked 1-12 based on their results, with the top three taking the medal positions.

Since debut at Rio 2016, both men’s events in the rugby sevens have been won by Fiji, and they will come here looking for the hat trick.
But as fourth favourites, the bookmakers do not see their chances being strong this time around.
France are the host nation, and favourites to win gold in this event, after taking the 2024 world series grand final just a month ago.
Led by Antoine Dupoint, who has switched codes from the 15-a-side game, helped his team win their first world series title in 19 years, and his switch has made a huge impact on how sevens is viewed within France.
