St Mirren v Celtic Match Preview
August not yet complete, St Mirren seemingly never busier. Six games already contested in all competitions this month and already they are out of both the Scottish League Cup and European action this season.
The dumping out of the former came last weekend as Stephen Robertson’s side were second best against Dundee United and considering the Tannadice outfit only made their return to the top tier a few weeks ago, their League Cup success was something of a surprise.
Their exit of the latter came at the hands of Norwegian outfit Brann and after the first leg of their Europa Conference League qualifier ended in 1-1 draw at The SMISA Stadium, the second ended in a heartbreaking 3-1 loss in Norway the following week.
With Alex Iacovitti restoring parity on the night, the tie was even at two goals each with a quarter of an hour remaining. Fast forward another 15 minutes and Brann had scored twice more to secure qualification at the hands of their Scottish counterparts.
However, it has not been all doom and gloom for St Mirren this season. They did taste some form of European joy in the opening round of the Conference League qualifiers at the expense of Iceland’s Valur, they also made light work of Hibernian in the opening Premiership weekend.
While it was Celtic that were making light work of Hibernian on Sunday – the second time that they had done so in as many weekends. The first time around was a routine 2-0 league win at Easter Road, last week it was a 3-1 League Cup win at Celtic Park.
Hibernian manager David Gray glad to see the back of the Hoops for the next couple of months, now it is St Mirren who are the next team that will attempt to stop the juggernaut that Brendan Rodgers is at the helm off.
After winning the Scottish Premiership last season, Celtic are already two points clear of perennial rivals Rangers and although it is only the third weekend of league action on the horizon, it will take a brave person to bet against the defending champions staying at the summit.
With automatic entry to the Champions League already secured, the additional revenue could place Celtic as the dominant force in Scottish football for at least another five years. Great news if you support them, bad news for just about everybody else.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with St Mirren finishing in the top five last season, The SMISA Stadium may not be the easiest place to go to. Therefore, I am going to back the draw after 45 minutes but a Celtic win after 90 at 10/3.
In addition to this, I am also going to opt for the correct score and if Celtic are to win this, a single goal victory may have to be enough. No complaints from manager Brendan Rodgers, no complaints from me if the 2-1 away win comes in at 8/1.
