Sunderland v West Brom Match Preview
Sunderland can look forward to the returns of key players on Tuesday night, with Trai Hume, Alan Browne, Patrick Roberts and, crucially, Jobe Bellingham, all set to come back into Regis Le Bris’ match-day squad.
Left-back Dennis Cirkin and wide man Romaine Mundle aren’t far away either, and although the latter two may miss out in midweek, there’s a growing feeling that the Black Cats have come through the injury crisis unscathed.
Of course, the Wearsiders can feel frustrated to have dropped late points against Coventry and Millwall, having led by two goals against the former and deep into stoppage time against the latter, but that was partly because they had such a youthful bench.
Now, their options in reserve will be stronger, which should make a huge difference to game management.
And, while Sunderland are winless in four league games, three of those games came away from home with numerous key men missing – and they’re still unbeaten in nine.
Although the next two games present a significant challenge, with Friday holding an arduous trip to Sheffield United, what follows is a more favourable run over December and January.
Bellingham's return shouldn’t be underestimated, with the former Birmingham academy product set to make a difference, especially in terms of retaining a griphold on midfield in the latter stages of games – while in Chris Mepham and Dan Ballard, they have two of the Championship’s top centre halves.
The Black Cats have an excellent defensive record, with just 12 goals conceded in 16 games, while West Brom have had their struggles going forward.
Carlos Corberan’s side have scored just 18 goals in the same number of matches, of which 10 have been scored by former Black Cat, Josh Maja – keep him quiet, and the opposition have a great chance.
