The game began with Sunderland capitalising on their home form early. Christopher Rigg opened the scoring in the 9th minute, seizing on a rebound to slot home and put Sunderland 1-0 up.
Leeds responded well, and their equaliser came in the 22nd minute when Joel Piroe headed in from a pinpoint cross by Wilfried Gnonto.
The second half saw Leeds take the lead in the 56th minute, as Gnonto once again was the provider, setting up Firpo for a clinical finish into the bottom corner.
However, Firpo and Meslier combined for an error in the 97th minute, handing Sunderland an equaliser.
