Tottenham v West Ham Match Preview
If you think the international break is bad enough, spare a thought for Tottenham supporters. Not only have they had to wait two weeks for their club to resume Premier League duties, but they have spent a fortnight stewing over a disastrous defeat to Brighton.
A defeat that looked highly unlikely when Ange Postecoglou’s men raced into a 2-0 lead at The Amex and as both the Seagulls and Spurs walked back into their respective dressing rooms at half time, at no point did you think an almighty turnaround was waiting around the corner.
Unfortunately for Spurs, that is precisely what happened and with Danny Welbeck scoring just a couple of minutes after the interval, the game played in lashings of East Sussex rain was very quickly turned on its head.
Even more so when Georginio Rutter fired home to restore what seemed to be unlikely parity only half an hour before and with the North London-based visitors reeling from going level, Welbeck was soon on hand to land a stunning knockout blow.
Spurs missing the chance to move up the table, manager Postecoglou coming in for another round of criticism and although his brand of football is lauded when the high rewards are earned, it is lambasted when the high risk does not pay off.
Now, he and his players have the awkwardness of playing the first post-break league encounter on this weekend’s schedule and there are not many more awkward teams to play in this time slot than West Ham.
Especially as the Hammers seem to find an extra 10% or more when contesting this all-London rivalry and whereas Saturday’s hosts have had almost two weeks to dissect defeat, the visitors have been boosted by a first league home win of the campaign.
A win that was nothing short of emphatic at the expense of Ipswich and due to finally getting maximum points at the London Stadium, the pressure that was building on West Ham’s manager has eased ever so slightly.
The sound of boos directed towards Julen Lopetegui after overseeing defeat at home to Chelsea but a far more harmonious environment after beating the Tractor Boys and now the former Spain boss will look to build on that 4-1 win by causing his Spurs counterpart further anguish.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with it being the lunchtime kickoff, it may be a game that fails to truly get going. Both teams not quite at their best – something you could apply to the season so far and therefore, I am backing the draw and both teams to score at 9/2.
In addition to this, I am also going to opt for a correct score tip and one that leans into the offering just above. Last season saw the Hammers win 2-1 in enemy territory, but this time I am backing the lunchtime outcome to be 1-1 at odds of 11/1.
