West Indies v England Match Preview
Added to a disastrous World Cup in India this time last year, England have lost their last two bilateral series - one against the West Indies in the Caribbean prior to Christmas and then the late summer series against Australia last month.
They were beaten 2-1 by the opponents they are about to face again and were beaten 3-2 by the Aussies.
Once again, a much-changed England squad has travelled for a pair of series - a three-match ODI series and then five T20Is.
Liam Livingstone captains in the ODI series with Jos Buttler missing through injury, and there are four uncapped players in Dan Mousley, Michael Pepper, John Turner and Jafer Chohan.
Despite those changes, England should still have enough quality to overcome a home side who have lost their last two ODI series, the latest being 2-1 in Sri Lanka over the last fortnight.
I wouldn’t be taking England at 4/7 to win the series, instead going with Coral's 6/4 on them to win it 2-1 correct score.
A hundred in the heat
I like the look of bet365’s 1/1 on there to be a century scored in this series opener in Antigua.
In the last three games of the September series against Australia, England were pretty strong with the bat and scored two centuries, though neither Harry Brook or Ben Duckett will be involved in this series. And opener Evin Lewis scored a ton for the West Indies in the final game of their Sri Lankan series.
I think there’s enough batting talent on show to see this bet home, particularly in England’s side.
William Hill have a match treble available at 15/8 which I would be taking. That’s for England to win, for them to hit the most fours and also have the highest score at the fall of the first wicket.
Jofra Archer is somewhat back on home turf. The Bajan-born England quick is heading in the right direction form and fitness wise.
In his last six appearances of the English summer, for Sussex, Southern Brave and England, he took two wickets in five of those. I like bet365’s 3/1 on him to be England’s top bowler in game number one.
Jordan Cox should be front and centre in this series. He has been added to the squad having been cover for the Test series in Pakistan, and it’s almost certain he will make his Test debut in New Zealand at the end of November with Jamie Smith unavailable due to paternity leave.
I’d imagine the management will want to get him used to international cricket having only played two T20Is so far - both against Australia.
I like the look of the Essex wicketkeeper-batter and suspect he may hit the ground running. bet365’s 5/1 on him to be England’s top run-scorer in this opening game is enticing, for sure.
Incidentally, it’s amazing that Cox has only ever played four List A matches in his career - a sign of the changing world of cricket.
