South Africa v New Zealand Match Preview
New Zealand made the first two T20 World Cup finals in 2009 and 2010, beaten on both occasions by England and then Australia. South Africa, meanwhile, have now reached the last two finals. Last time out, they were beaten in the final by Australia last February.
The Proteas provided the greatest storyline in recent memory in the women’s game by overpowering the invincible Australian side in Thursday’s semi-final in Dubai. The Aussies have won this competition six times and had reached seven finals.
The Kiwis, meanwhile, were too good for West Indies - England’s conquerers - in yesterday’s semi-final at Sharjah.
New Zealand are ranked as the fourth best T20I team in the world, according to the ICC, whilst South Africa are fifth.
But I have a feeling for the South Africans, who are actually the favourites at 4/6 - likely because of who they beat in the semis and likely because they reached the last final.
Victory for either side would be no shock, but I will be siding with the Proteas. But not at odds on.
Instead, I have put together a bet365 bet builder treble, available at 8/5, on a South Africa win and for talismanic bowlers Marizanne Kapp (SA) and Amelia Kerr (NZ) to take one wicket apiece.
Kerr has been in better form than Kapp, though that’s not to say the latter has been poor. She absolutely hasn’t, as I will explain in a moment or two. But she is just a big game player.
If I was compiling a women’s fantasy XI, she would be one of the first names on my team sheet across any format.
Amelia’s been Kerr-fect - let’s stick with her
Kiwi leg-spinning all-rounder Amelia Kerr is the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 12 so far, including at least two wickets in four of her five appearances.
She returned us a short-priced winner yesterday by claiming two wickets in victory over West Indies, and I see absolutely no reason to change a successful formula.
She is Evens with bet365 to strike twice in the final, a price I’d be taking.
Paddy Power have a #WhatOddsPaddy 15/8 shot available on batters Anneke Bosch of South Africa and Suzie Bates of New Zealand to each score 20 runs - that’s something which interests me.
Bosch has achieved that in her last two matches, scoring 25 and, in the semi-final against Australia, 74 not out. Veteran opener Bates has achieved that feat in four of her five matches at this competition.
Even though South African spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba has taken 10 wickets in this tournament, twice as many as seamer Marizanne Kapp, I’m fully expecting the latter to have a good day.
Time and time again, she stands up in big games. Just ask the Oval Invincibles, for whom she was player-of-the-match in both finals when they won the Hundred title in 2021 and 2022.
Kapp is 3/1 to be South Africa’s top bowler in the match with BoyleSports.
Finally, sticking with Kapp, as aforementioned, she has a history of achieving player-of-the-match status in finals. Well, I can really see that happening again.
Livescore Bet have that available at 8/1 to wrap up our T20 World Cup betting tips preview.
