Wrexham Championship Odds: How will the Dragons get on?

Updated: April 28, 2025 at 1:49 pm GMT+1

Wrexham made it three promotions on the bounce at the weekend, hammering Charlton at home to seal second place in League One at the first time of asking.

Wycombe had lost earlier in the day giving the Red Dragons the chance to secure promotion to the Championship, which they did with a comprehensive 3-0 win at home over promotion rivals Charlton.

Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have made no secret of their ambitions to get Wrexham into the Premier League and now they're only one season away from doing so, despite only completing their takeover of the club in 2020.

They have been favourites with online betting sites for their three promotions, but it will be a much harder task in the Championship with the level of competition they will face, but let's have a look at how they might get on next season.

Automatic Promotion

You would think that even the most ardent, die-hard Wrexham supporter would accept that another automatic promotion would be bordering on the miraculous.

It's not that they won't be able to compete - I am sure they will - but they'll be playing in a totally different world in the Championship to what they've previously encountered, and the wealth that has set them apart no longer does so.

In Ipswich, Leicester and Southampton there will be three clubs receiving parachute payments from the Premier League, while clubs like Luton and Sheffield United could still be in the league and taking money after their own relegations in recent years.

We have seen recently how that money has given teams a massive advantage when it comes to promotion. Leeds and Burnley went up this season in the top two - both receiving parachute payments - while Leicester, Burnley and Sheffield United have all done so in years before.

It would be a surprise if Wrexham can spend big enough to compete or gel as cohesively with what's likely to be a new squad as Ipswich did under Kieran McKenna, but as the Tractor Boys showed, it is possible to go from second place in League One to the Premier League...

Play-Offs

At this stage, the play-offs would be about the best Wrexham can aim for, in my opinion.

Yes it will take some serious strengthening of their squad, but so far the owners have showed a willingness to do that and we should expect more to come, and perhaps a marquee signing or two - Jamie Vardy, anyone?

But looking at the other clubs in and around the top six now, I don't think there is too much for Wrexham to be afraid of.

Coventry have lost 17 games so far this season, Millwall 15, Blackburn 18 and they're all competing for sixth place, while Bristol City in fifth have only won 17 of 44 matches - there are a lot of good clubs competing in that space, but none of them are particularly convincing.

Wrexham's gameplan in recent years has been to splash out on experienced pros who have played at a higher level, but can players like Steven Fletcher, Jay Rodriguez and James McClean make the difference in the Championship? They'll need to fork out a bit of cash to bring in the calibre of players who can excel at the level, but who is backing against that happening?

Mid-Table

Given the drama in the four seasons since the Hollywood takeover, this would probably be something of an anti-climax, but you'd have to consider it a very successful season if they were safe this time next year.

They've finished play-off runners-up, National League champions, League Two runners-up and League One runners-up in the last four years so it would seem totally out of character for a Wrexham season to peter out, but it should be a realistic ambition.

What they should be aiming for next season is to establish themselves in the Championship, avoid relegation and then build from there.

I'm not sure that will be what the ownership at the club will be thinking, but it would be a success without doubt, and one I think they're capable of pulling off - if they strengthen as predicted.

Relegation

It will be a significant step up from League One to the Championship, there should be no doubt about that.

But we said that about League Two to League One, didn't we? The calibre of clubs goes up another level from here, to the point where they will be competing with big clubs like Stoke, Derby, Norwich, Watford and more - clubs who have been in the Premier League in the not too distant past.

These are big clubs with established revenue streams that would dwarf anything in League One, so it stands to reason that anyone promoted from the third tier would be up against it.

The hype and excitement around Wrexham may make it seem inevitable that they were going to be promoted, but in reality they have squeezed past Wycombe to claim an automatic spot - and if Wycombe had been promoted, what would we expect from them next season?

I think Wrexham will have enough about them and will strengthen more than the likes of Oxford, Plymouth and even Portsmouth have done in recent years after promotion to avoid the threat of going down, but it wouldn't be a surprise if the current squad struggled to cope with the step up.
