Mark Williams to beat Xiao Guodong
Mark Williams dispatched of Neil Robertson pretty handily in Saturday night’s semi-final, reaching the first Champion of Champions final of his illustrious career.
As well as beating the in-form Australian, Williams has bested world champion Kyren Wilson and Bai Yulu this week, and the Welshman seems extremely happy with his game at the age of 49.
It was as close to a complete performance as we’ve seen from Williams for a while on Saturday, and if he can drag this form into the final – especially his safety play – then you’d expect him to find a route to victory against Guodong.
The Chinese player’s route to the final has been unrivalled.
Wins over Ronnie O’Sullivan, Mark Selby and Mark Allen read as a murderers row of opposition, but he has shown his clutch abilities by winning two deciding frames and you could easily make an argument that Williams is the weakest opponent he will have faced all week.
But these wins must have zapped the energy of the 35-year-old who isn’t used to competing at these heights.
His 2024 Wuhan Open win was a shock and a semi-final run at the International Championship was the only other big dent he has made on the tour since turning pro.
It could go down to the wire again, but experience is an important commodity in snooker and we give Williams the edge.
