Arsenal v Monaco Match Preview
With three Champions League matchdays remaining in this season’s new league phase, Arsenal are currently one of eight clubs who have an automatic invite to the knockout stage of the competition.
An invite that although within the possession of the Gunners at present, it is not necessarily placed within a vice-like grip and with goal difference keeping Mikel Arteta’s men in the top eight before Matchday 6 begins, it is not just wins that are necessary from here on in.
In addition to collecting maximum points, it is also the requirement to win by as big a margin as possible and with sixth to twelfth in the table all sitting on 10 points at the time of writing, there is still plenty to play for when it comes to European club football’s premier competition.
While there is still plenty to play for in terms of the Premier League and with Liverpool’s attempt to win the Merseyside derby being foiled by Storm Darragh, Arsenal’s attempt to cut the gap at the top was foiled by Fulham a day later.
Foiled and then overtaken by Chelsea in their current quest to be the best of the rest domestically but Wednesday night sees them return their focus to eventually being the best of the best in Europe as they play host to Monaco.
The Ligue 1 outfit are from Monte Carlo or bust as they arrive in North London and with Adi Hütter’s men sitting a single position ahead of Arsenal before Tuesday’s Champions League fixtures began, they also know that the job is not quite yet done.
With 10 points on the board, a top-24 finish is all but secured now but due to their lofty standing that could have been even stronger were it not for a Matchday 5 defeat to Benfica, like Arsenal, they now want to keep hold to their automatic invite to the knockout stage.
A scenario that means if either or both sides fail to win this encounter at the Emirates, the teams that currently sit below them will be smelling blood and although this competition format has not yet shown any true jeopardy, these are the games where the needle starts to increase.
Unlike Wednesday’s hosts, the visitors approach this game having picked up a league win and after Hütter’s men picked up a 2-0 win at home to Toulouse on Saturday, they certainly cannot afford to lose in just a few hours.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with the Gunners having conceded just two goals all tournament, I think another clean sheet is not out of the question and with that in mind, I am going to back the home win and under 2.5 goals at odds of 13/5 with bet365.
In addition to this, I am going to back Bukayo Saka to run my first tip close but still do enough so they can both be successful. With that in mind, I am backing the England international to score two goals at odds of 17/2 with BoyleSports.
