Aston Villa v West Ham Match Preview
Just as they did last season, Aston Villa have put a massive dent in Arsenal’s bid to win the Premier League and although they were good value for their share of the points at the Emirates on Saturday, they failed to follow it up in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Although it was far from Monte Carlo or bust when Unai Emery’s men faced Monaco at the Stade Louis II stadium, those within the Villa camp were fully aware that victory would boost their chances of finishing within the top eight of the league format.
However, the high’s of the weekend were a distant memory by the time Wilfried Singo opened the scoring for Monaco in the eighth minute and although there was plenty of time for Villa to get back into the game, the Ivorian’s early strike would prove to be the only entry on the scoresheet.
Nothing to take back to the West Midlands and then an awkward wait to see what happened the following evening. Now that Matchday 7 of the Champions League is complete, Villa find themselves sitting agonisingly outside the top eight in ninth.
European concerns now have to wait for another week as Premier League matters return to the top of the agenda and although Villa may be coveting an eighth place on the continent, the same ranking does not hold the same value back home.
That is where they start the weekend before the visit of West Ham, they may be a position worse off by the time they and the Hammers take to the field and with Graham Potter’s men having lost in their last league outing, they will be keen to put the home defeat to Crystal Palace behind them.
A 2-0 reverse at the hands of the Eagles – a result that followed a 3-2 home win over Fulham and with mixed fortunes against clubs from the capital, Potter and his players will now look for a reversal of fortunes against Villa.
The two sides meeting in the FA Cup just a couple of weeks ago and with West Ham drawing first blood in the game, it looked as if the team that is forever blowing bubbles had also found some new manager bounce.
Then again, goals from Amadou Onana and Morgan Rogers soon saw West Ham’s bubble burst and although cup progress has been halted for the Hammers, that exit will soon be forgotten if they can earn a second league win in three outings.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips, and I think recent history will repeat itself on Sunday, Villa have not lost any of their last 10 home league outings but are susceptible at the back. Therefore, I am backing the home win and both teams to score at odds of 11/5 with bet365.
In addition to this, with both sides averaging 17 tackles per game, I think this might not be the most bruising affair. With this in mind, I am also backing under 19.5 total free kicks to be awarded and this is priced at odds of 9/1.
