After overseeing a 4-1 defeat at the Etihad on Saturday, the writing was always going to be on the wall for Julen Lopetegui and although the first murmurs of his departure were heard on Monday, it took until Wednesday for the news to be confirmed.
The former Wolves boss can now add West Ham to his list of former outposts and although Graham Potter has taken his time when it comes to picking his return point into English football, the Hammers board have wasted none in appointing the 49-year-old.
Appointed on Thursday manager, thrust straight into the limelight just over 24 hours later and with hardly any time to run the rule over his newly inherited players, he and his squad make the journey to Villa Park with cup progress in mind.
Then again, Aston Villa will have the same thoughts of cup progress and a safe passage to the Fourth Round of the competition on their mind and although the FA Cup is dominated by members of the big six, this season could be ripe for a different name eventually being engraved.
If the Premier League table is anything to go by, the natural order has been largely disrupted since the start of the campaign and when you consider that Unai Emery led Villa to a fourth place finish last time around, he knows about disruption just as much as anyone else.
A finish that has allowed Villa to upgrade on their European adventure as they currently find themselves in the thick of Champions League action and although they may not replicate their elite status at the end of this campaign, there is no doubt their support have a taste for the continent.

Those who were in attendance at Villa Park last weekend would have seen a late Leon Bailey goal prove to be the difference as they edged past a struggling Leicester side and thanks to three more points, they currently find themselves sitting eighth in the league table.
Six places higher than that of West Ham before Friday’s encounter, but its not about the league ladder this weekend, it is about taking the first step on the road to Wembley and for one of these two sides, the route to the capital will be blocked off rather quickly.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips, and I have been sucked in by the new manager bounce that comes with Graham Potter’s arrival in East London. With this in mind, I am going to back the West Ham win at odds of 18/5 with BetVictor.
