Adelaide Strikers v Perth Scorchers Preview
It’s been a steady start for perennial challengers Perth Scorchers having won two and lost two. But Adelaide Strikers are on a knife-edge. Lose this one and they’d be four defeats from five and with a mountain to climb.
I expect Perth to claim the win in this clash which will be played against the backdrop of fireworks from the nearby Adelaide city centre, or the Central Business District as they call it Down Under.
The Scorchers are 17/20 to win, but I think there’s better value around.
Instead, I have put together a 1/1 bet builder double with bet365. That’s for Perth to win and for there to be a fifty scored in the match.
There’s no Laurel, but we do have Hardie
I expect this to be a high-scoring affair, and I can see Aaron Hardie having a good day for Perth.
The Australian white ball all-rounder missed the start of the competition through injury, but he’s back now. He scored 24 batting at number four when the Scorchers won against champions Brisbane Heat on Boxing Day.
First of all, I’d be keen to take betfair’s 6/4 - on offer via their #OddsOnThat selections - on both Matt Short (Adelaide) and Cooper Connolly (Perth) to combine to hit four sixes.
I also like Jason Behrendorff to be Perth’s top bowler.
The experienced left-arm seamer has taken seven wickets in the opening four matches, and at time of writing is the joint leading wicket-taker in the tournament.
Paddy Power have him at 7/2 to lead the way with the ball for the men in Orange.
Now to Hardie, who is due a score. He’s had a quiet few months in Australian domestic cricket. But I think he is a cricketer who will stamp his authority on this competition.
Having watched him in the late summer white ball series in England, he looked to be a vastly improved cricketer from, say 12 months ago.
Betway have the Bournemouth-born Aussie at 15/4 to score a fifty in this fixture.
Runs, runs, runs could mean tons, tons, tons
When I think about the Big Bash, I think about the New Year’s Eve clash at the Adelaide Oval, one of my favourite cricket grounds in the world.
As much as this competition has had its faults - it’s been too long in recent years - I do think this is an iconic occasion.
And I remember back to when Travis Head smashed a 53-ball ton against Sydney Sixers in 2015. It was a truly fabulous knock.
Well, it wouldn’t surprise me to see something similar in this year’s fixture.
There is some serious batting talent on show, be it Adelaide opener Matt Short and Chris Lynn or Perth’s aforementioned Hardie or Cooper Connolly.
And if there’s a repeat of the Adelaide v Hobart match last week when the latter won on this ground by 11 runs with 214-6 on the board, we should have a chance.
Bet365 are offering 8/1 on a century to be scored in the match.
