Hobart Hurricanes v Sydney Sixers Preview
The Big Bash has had some criticism in recent years, for scheduling and for quality reasons. But I think this year’s edition has been very, very entertaining.
Plenty of tight games, standout performances with bat and ball and qualification for the knockouts going down to the final game when Melbourne Stars snuck in having recovered from losing their opening five games of the tournament.
This Qualifier clash sees the winner qualify for next Monday’s final and earn the right to host the showpiece. The loser gets a second chance later this week.
Sydney have lost some key players ahead of the finals in Todd Murphy, Steve Smith and James Vince, whereas Hobart looked pretty settled. They lost yesterday to the Melbourne Stars at the MCG, but they protected their seamers Nathan Ellis, Chris Jordan and Riley Meredith. The former two only bowled four overs between them, Meredith didn’t play at all.
Despite fancying Hobart to win this one, I wouldn’t be taking them at 5/6, as they are with a number of firms.
Instead, I would be interested in bet365’s boosted bet builder treble. That’s 11/4 on a Hobart win and for them to make the highest six-over score and hit most sixes.
As I said, Sydney have lost some key stars, and they have been disrupted at the top of their batting order with the loss of Smith and Vince. That could be costly.
Will Riley’s Hobart be Merry after this fixture?
Hobart fast bowler Riley Meredith has impressed in this tournament, taking 11 wickets in eight matches. Although he was expensive and wicketless in his last appearance against Brisbane last week, he claimed five wickets across his two matches before that.
I’d be taking him at 5/4 with bet365 to take two or more wickets in this match.
Betfred have a 13/10 #PickYourPunt selection available, which is for any two of the Hobart batting trio Mitch Owen, Matthew Wade and Ben McDermott to score 30 runs in the match.
Opener Owen has been most consistent, achieving that feat in his last two innings with 44 and 38. Wade has only done it once in the last six innings but has gone beyond 20 twice more in that run. McDermott has done it twice in six innings this term.
There will have to be a bit of a shift around in Sydney’s batting order with the most recent departure of Steve Smith to Australian Test duties. Earlier in the competition, Jack Edwards was deployed as a locum number three. It may be worth a low stakes approach on him to be the Sixers’ top batter in this match at 6/1 with betfair.
If he is elevated up their order again, that’s a decent price.
Stars to shine
I tipped Melbourne Renegades to win the title before a ball was bowled, but it’s their cross-town rivals who have all the momentum as we head into a week of finals cricket having won five successive games.
They have ridden on the stunning form of their superstar all-rounder Glenn Maxwell - scores of 58 not out, 90 and 76 not out in his last three innings -while their bowling is working like clockwork too. Seamer Mark Steketee has taken 12 wickets in his last three games, for example.
They will have to do it the hard way to win their first title, having to prevail in three more matches. But they’re firing with bat and ball, and I will be siding with them to win the title at 5/1 with BetVictor.
