Sydney Sixers v Sydney Thunder Preview
I didn’t expect Sydney Thunder to beat the Melbourne Stars on Wednesday morning, but they were excellent in defending a target of 136 on a spinning pitch.
And now I think they could go on and join the Hobart Hurricanes in next Monday’s final down in Tasmania.
That kind of come-from-behind win - by 21 runs on DLS - can do wonders for a side, and I do have concerns about the Sydney Sixers given the loss of three key players to Australian Test duty. In fact, I agree with Thunder spinner Tanveer Sangha, who has said their rivals are “vulnerable”.
Like they were in defeat against Hobart on Monday, the Sixers will once again be minus Sean Abbott, Todd Murphy and Steve Smith, who are all preparing for a tour of Sri Lanka.
So, my pick Thunder are 21/20 with betway to win and make it third time lucky this season in the Sydney Smash derby. They lost at home before Christmas and had the return game rained off last Friday.
It would also be their first win against the Sixers at the SCG since January 2017. And they’re due having lost six in a row at all venues against their rivals!
Hurricanes could get a Warn-ing ahead of final
I think BetGoodwin’s 6/5 on Sydney Thunder to hit the most sixes in the match provides value. Yes, the Sixers have hit more sixes in the tournament - by 48 to 39 - but their biggest six-hitter in Steve Smith with 11 is unavailable for this match.
I also like betway’s 17/10 on Sydney Sixers’ leg-spinner Jafer Chohan - Yorkshire’s England fringe twirler - to take two or more wickets in the match.
Chohan has been progressing nicely at home and abroad over the last 12 months. He bowled well in defeat against Hobart at the start of the week with 2-28, and the Australians will still be getting used to him. I can see him having some success here.
Despite posting a duck in beating the Melbourne Stars, Thunder captain David Warner has been prolific at the top of their order.
He’s the second leading run-scorer in the tournament with 346, including standout scores of 86 not out, 49, 50 and 88 not out.
bet365 are offering 12/5 on him to score a fifty in this contest. Now, I thought about him for Thunder top batter but instead have opted for this selection as there’s not a major difference in the prices. This way we eliminate the possibility of him scoring 54 and somebody usurping him with 55, for example.
To finish this T20 betting tips preview, I’m going to stick with Warner success and side with betfair’s OddsBoost of 8/1 on the veteran left-hander to be named as the Player-of-the-Match.
