Sydney Thunder v Sydney Sixers Preview
It’s the first double-header day in this season’s Big Bash, with Hobart Hurricanes also hosting Perth Scorchers in Hobart. But we are concentrating on the Sydney derby which follows.
The Thunder host the Sixers in our breakfast time slot, and this is a clash between two sides who I expect to be there and thereabouts come the back end of the tournament.
The Sixers are pretty much always challenging, and they opened up with a victory over Melbourne Renegades on Monday. The Thunder look to have a really nice balance throughout their team and also started with a W - against Adelaide Strikers on Tuesday in a thriller which saw them chase 184 to win by two wickets. It needed Daniel Sams to hit 31 off the penultimate over for them to get over the line.
It’s no surprise to me that there’s very little to choose between them in the odds. But I will be siding with Thunder to win this one, and they’re the marginal outsiders at 11/10 with betfred.
To me, they have dynamism throughout their side. David Warner and Sam Konstas up top, Sam Billings in the middle, Sams down the order and, with the ball, New Zealand quick Lockie Ferguson is excellent and spin bowling all-rounder Chris Green such a steady hand.
I have tipped Melbourne Renegades to win the tournament outright, but if you said to me, ‘It will be a Renegades v Thunder final’, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit.
I can’t see Hobart beating Perth Scorchers in the 5am game having been bowled out for 74 in a heavy opening round defeat against the Melbourne Renegades. So why not have a crack at the Scorchers and Thunder win double at 2.36/1 with bet365.
Lockie’s not lucky, he’s quality
Thunder’s Kiwi overseas Lockie Ferguson has taken three wickets in each of his last four limited overs appearances, dating back to the end of October. That is two 50-over matches and a pair of T20s, including his Thunder debut against Adelaide earlier this week.
It surprises me somewhat that for a bowler of his quality, you can get 13/8 with bet365 on him take two or more wickets in this match. I would be siding with that every day of the week.
I always like Sean Abbott when it comes to success with the ball for Sydney Sixers. He is the competition’s all-time leading wicket-taker with 167 to his name from 119 matches. He struck twice in Monday’s win over Melbourne Renegades, and his skill maybe very useful on a pitch which isn’t always the easiest for batting.
BetMGM are one of those who have him at 11/4 to be the Sixers’ top bowler in the match.
Everywhere you turn, you hear such good things about young Thunder opener Sam Konstas. There is a clamour Down Under to get him in the Test team.
He scored 56 off 27 balls against the Strikers in their opening game, and his last three innings across all formats have been 56, 88 and 107.
This should be the type of occasion where this 19-year-old thrives, and I like Paddy Power’s 4/1 on him to be Thunder’s top batter. That price on an in-form opener is seriously enticing.
Let’s hope Jack’s Jumping
I will finish off with a long-shot bet on all-rounder Jack Edwards to be the Sixers’ top batter. He’s a young all-rounder who seems to be settling into senior pro cricket and scored 37 batting at three in their opening win over Melbourne Renegades.
Seemingly, he wouldn’t have batted there in usual circumstances, but Daniel Hughes suffered an elbow injury earlier in the match and couldn’t bat. He has since been ruled out of the tournament. So it could be that Edwards is told to go again on the back of his success.
If so, BetVictor’s 12/1 on him to be their top batter in this fixture would be a fabulous price.
