Blackburn v Burnley Match Preview
Blackburn and Burnley share one of the Championship’s most fiercely contested derbies, despite the two clubs not having faced one another too often due to rarely being in the same league this century.
The stereotypes around derbies, however, in that neither side wants to risk losing, could come to fruition in this East Lancashire clash, with both boasting impeccable defensive records.
The Clarets could finish 2024-25 with a history-making ‘Against’ column because, not only have they kept a phenomenal 16 clean sheets in 25 league games, they’ve only conceded once in each of the other nine.
James Trafford’s shot-stopping has contributed to this, with the talented goalkeeper putting a difficult Premier League campaign behind him, but what’s in front of him is key.
Reliable right-back Connor Roberts, French-fancied Maxime Estève, ball-playing prospect CJ Egan-Riley and versatile left-back Bashir Humphreys have forged a great understanding due to the continuity in team selections, aided and abetted by the assured Josh Cullen at the base of midfield.
It’s not just the visitors boasting a strong rear-guard, though, because Play-Off contenders Blackburn recently won six in a row, the last five of which to nil, and limited Leeds to just 12 shots at Elland Road, and they needed a penalty to find the net before Danny Batth’s brisk late reply earnt John Eustace’s side a point.
Batth’s organisational qualities and aerial reliability has been key to his strong partnership with dependable Dom Hyam, while goalkeeper Aynsley Pears and midfielder Sondre Tronstad continue to further their respective reputations as one of the best players in the Championship in their respective positions.
So, those two solid bases could lead to a stalemate at Ewood Park, as well as the fact this match marks the end of a congested festive period: if the scores are level in the second half, will either side have what’s required in the tank to drive for a winner?
