Crystal Palace v Arsenal Match Preview
For those armchair investors who were tempted to sell their stock in Crystal Palace a month or so ago but instead decided to keep the South London club in their portfolio, there is now a sense that a return on investment is starting to form.
The Eagles may have got off to rocky start to the campaign but under the same manager who oversaw such a strong end to the previous season, the faith that was placed on the shoulders of Oliver Glasner has now also started to pay dividends.
Whereas Premier League counterparts have seen club chairman pull the trigger, Steve Parish has instead held his nerve and as a consequence of giving the Austrian the time to turn things around, that is precisely what the former Europa League winner as boss of Eintracht Frankfurt has done.
Since picking up their first win of the league campaign at the expense of Tottenham, Glasner’s men have only lost one of the seven games that have followed in the competition – their sole reverse coming at the hands of Fulham in a 2-0 home defeat in November.
A positive run of results that has also seen Palace pick up three important points at Brighton on Sunday. Important, not only because it provides the South London outfit with a margin between themselves and the bottom three but also bragging rights over their South Coast rivals.
However, bragging rights are not something that can be traded in for Premier League survival and with the Selhurst Park outfit now aiming to look up the table than opposed to over their shoulders, they will have to hope for home comforts at the weekend.
With a Carabao Cup meeting against Arsenal at the Emirates in midweek, the roles are reversed on Saturday and with the Gunners having misfired at both Craven Cottage and on their own turf in the past fortnight, a title tilt could also be a thing of the past.
Not solely because they have failed to make inroads on Liverpool’s own failures to win their last two in the league but also because Chelsea have managed to come out on top in each of theirs and as a consequence, they now have a four-point gap over the Gunners in second.
Mikel Arteta’s men no longer the best of the rest and they can ill afford to be anything but the best when they make the crosstown journey to Selhurst Park. Anything else than maximum points in this one and the Gunners’ hopes of winning the title could go up in smoke.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips, and I think this is the encounter where Arsenal do return to winning ways in the league, but they may have to grind it out. With this in mind, I am backing the away win and under 2.5 total goals at odds of 3/1 with betfair.
In addition to this, there might be no bigger way to grind out an away win by getting a man sent off in the process. Arsenal have already had three of their players given their marching orders and I’ll take any player home or away to be sent off in the first half at odds of 20/1 with bet365.
