England v Scotland Match Preview
After a losing streak-ending win against France a couple of weeks ago, there is optimism around this England team and a few whispers about them being title challengers this year.
If they can win the Calcutta Cup this weekend, they have only games against Italy and Wales to come which could see them coming out with four wins out of five, along with the bonus points claimed against Ireland which could put them in contention if Ireland slip up.
For now though, they must focus on backing up that win at the Allianz Stadium from two weeks ago.
France were sloppy at times and should really have got the win, but it's only fair to say that England too have thrown away a number of winning positions in the recent past so getting over the line should not be taken lightly, and it should do wonders for this side that they have managed to come out on the right side of one of those kind of games.
It should serve them well for a very big game on Saturday against a Scotland side who have won the last five encounters between the two sides, so a big-game temperament and game management will certainly be needed.
Givenwhat we saw against France, there is no reason to believe Fin Smith is not capable of delivering that and if they can knit together another impressive win, then I really think we could be looking at a top side emerging here.
For Scotland, they really need a win to get back on track and ease some of the pressure building on Gregor Townsend.
They once again failed to trouble Ireland last week which leaves them facing another middling campaign and a year of stagnation, and with Darcy Graham missing this week they're certainly not at full strength.
Finn Russell plays after the concussion suffered two weeks ago but he will surely be targeted by England, and Duhan van der Merwe will be lurking on the wing as the top try-scorer against England in Six Nations history - many of them spectacular.
It should be a tricky game to call between two slightly flawed sides, but I do expect England to win - it's just by how many that is the question in my mind.
Due to Scotland's good record in this fixture of late, I think that will keep them in it but I'm going for England to win by 1-7 points at 16/5 with Paddy Power as a first tip for this game.
Huw Jones is another who has a great record against England and we have seen that backs have had success against the Red Rose so far this year, so I'd be looking at the centre to score in the first half at 11/2 with William Hill.
