England v South Africa Match Preview
Two games into England's international season and there are still plenty of questions yet to be answered by Scott Borthwick's side.
There have been some real bright moments in attack, taking New Zealand right to the wire before poor game management cost them the game, but there was real cause for concern in the defeat to Australia last week in conceding 42 points on home turf to a below-par Wallabies side.
Taking the lead in the dying moments should have been enough to avoid an embarrassing defeat but they conspired to concede a fifth try and spark more concerns about the direction of the side.
The hardest test is arguably to come with world champions South Africa next up on Saturday, but it could salvage England's autumn and having shown that they can compete with the best sides in the world, it would be no surprise to see them put up a good fight.
Eventually though, they have to start winning these matches and show more in defence if they are considered to be a side challenging for the 6 Nations in a few months time.
Unfortunately for them though, while they have a decent recent record against the Springboks - they have won three and lost three of their last six meetings in the past six years - I think they will come off second best again, making it three from three in these matches.
Matches between these two sides tend to be close - of the last three games, two have been decided by a single point - but it belies the gap between them, and while I expect South Africa to be relatively comfortable in winning, I do fancy England to get a little closer than most expect.
We have seen that in attack England can cause real problems for teams, so for them to win with a +5 handicap at 5/4 with Betfred is a decent price, although I must admit I would have expected it to be slightly longer.
Kurt-Lee Arendse will be a familiar name for England fans having scored at Twickenham two years ago and he scored twice in the World Cup before touching down against Ireland in the summer too, and then again in the Rugby Championship.
Put simply, he scores a lot of tries and will be a big threat to England. And given that four tries have already been scored against England by wingers in the two matches so far, I'm tipping Arendse to add two more at 8/1 with Midnite.
