New Europa League Format
The Europa League kicks off on Wednesday, and for the first week of action, we have games spread across two nights, with games on Wednesday and Thursday, and no Champions League, allowing this competition to take centre stage.
British hopes are high, in particular with Manchester United and Tottenham, United begin their quest for silverware on Wednesday, while Tottenham start a day later.
A new format will be in place this season, replacing the group stage with a 36-team league stage. We will also no longer have teams moving into this competition after they’ve played in the Champions League.
I think this will make it easier for football betting sites and punters to try and predict what will happen in the competition.
This also means the teams starting now, are the only ones to compete, the winner will come from these teams, and it also means that while ever this format is in place, the defending champions will never be able to defend their title. Last season’s winners Atalanta are in the Champions League, as reward for winning this competition, and won’t be able to drop down at any point.
A total of eight matchdays will form the league phase, and that runs until January. After this, the teams at the top of the league will all progress through into the knockout round.
Teams from 9th to 24th will face each other in a knockout phase and the eight winners will go through to take on the teams placed 1st to 8th in the last 16 stage, with quarter finals, semi finals and a final after that.
