Everton v Peterborough Match Preview
To signify how congested the English football calendar has now become, the second Carabao Cup semi-final first leg is played the night before this season’s FA Cup Third Round gets underway at Goodison Park.
The Toffees play their slice of cup action on Thursday and although getting to play your tie earlier may give you more time before the next round of Premier League fixtures, it could also offer more time to dwell on a poor result.
Sean Dyche’s men have not been alien to poor results in recent weeks as the blue half of Merseyside have failed to win any of their last five league outings and more importantly, they have lost both their last two.
A home defeat to high-flying Nottingham Forest followed by an away reverse to equally lofty Bournemouth at the weekend and the only thing equal about these two performances from an Everton perspective is failure to get on the scoresheet.
Failure that has also seen them score just a single goal in their last five league outings and although it easy to point to doom and gloom, defensive robustness has allowed them to share points with the trio of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City.
However, there are no points up for grabs at the weekend, only cup progress and although Peterborough are largely out of sorts within the confines of this season’s League One, the Posh will still be confident of giving their Premier League hosts a bloody nose.
Especially as Posh manager Darren Ferguson has arguably nothing to lose at this stage of his fourth stint in charge of the East Anglian club and with this outfit usually in and around the playoff places, they currently find themselves a lot closer to the relegation zone instead.
Like Everton, Peterborough have not won any of their last five league outings. Unlike Everton’s three points from the last 15 on offer, the team that sit two tiers below them have only collected a single point after a recent 2-2 draw at Burton.
But with this being the greatest cup competition in the world, even if the powerbrokers do its best to make sure it no longer is, the thought of league form before kickoff will be of no thought of all and that is where the romance usually happens.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and because Everton cannot hit a barn door lately, I think this has all the hallmarks of an upset and with that in mind, I am backing the Peterborough to avoid defeat in 90 minutes at odds of 13/5 with betfair.
In addition to this, I am actually going to go all in on Peterborough and back them to not only avoid defeat but also win before the need of extra-time. Therefore, the away win and under 3.5 total goals can also be backed at odds of 11/1 with Betfred.
