New Zealand v England Match Preview
These two sides are polar opposites in terms of their styles.
England are a side who you just don’t know what you’re getting from them. One match they can be brilliant, the next they can be absolutely abysmal. They are a fascinating watch because of that.
New Zealand, on the other hand, are much more pragmatic and get the absolutely most out of their ability.
The Kiwis are still in the race for the ICC World Test Championship final next summer. Even a 3-0 series win may not be enough, but they would be mighty unlucky not to advance with that scoreline.
My hunch is that New Zealand will win this series. They have just come off that win in India. Earlier this year, they beat South Africa 2-0 at home and lost by the same scoreline to Australia.
In terms of the first Test, Coral are offering 11/10 on a New Zealand win, which I think is the play against an England side who have won only two of their last eight away Test Matches.
bet365 are offering 11/4 on the Kiwis to win the series 2-1. I’m expecting a close series, and that would be my play instead of taking them at a shorter price (6/5) to just win the series.
Hooray Henry
New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry was the only seamer to reach double figures wickets-wise in their recent series in India. He claimed 10 in two matches, including eight in one.
There were other more prolific bowlers, but they were all spinners.
Conditions in New Zealand should be more seam bowler friendly, and I would be keen to take Henry at 14/5 to be his side’s top first-innings bowler. Bet Goodwin have that price available.
Sticking with Henry, he’s part of a betway Pre-Built bets double which is available at 15/4.
That’s for him to take three wickets in the first innings and for Joe Root to score a fifty for England in the first innings.
Root has an excellent record against New Zealand in Test Matches. It’s not as eye-catching as Daryl Mitchell’s against England - I will come to that in a second - but it has come over a much longer period.
Root has scored 1,707 runs in 18 matches, including eight fifties and five hundreds.
To finish, Mitchell’s past form against England will give them nightmares.
He has scored 741 runs in seven matches, including three hundreds - all which came in the summer 2022 series in England.
Mitchell scored an 82 in the first innings of the third Test in India at the start of the month, batting at number five. I think he’s worth siding with at a juicy 5/1 with betfair to be New Zealand’s top first-innings run-scorer.
