Germany will be keen to build upon their stirring win over Scotland when they face Hungary in their second Group A game on Wednesday evening. Julian Nagelsmann’s charges began with aplomb during the curtain raiser last Friday against rather limited opposition in Scotland as they surged to a 5-1 victory.
The manner of the win coupled with some exceptional displays from the likes of Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz laid down an impressive marker of their credentials.
Hungary, on the other hand, who had come into the tournament as one of the proverbial dark horses were cast aside 3-1 by Switzerland, and after falling behind, they never seemed likely to turn things around.
Marco Rossi’s men now have one of the lowest win ratios (17%) compared to nations who have played five or more games at the Euros finals.
Things don’t get much easier for them as they have to contend with Germany who will be looking for a similarly rampant display to the one they produced against Scotland.
Die Mannschaft to rule the roost again
Ok, a 5-1 evisceration of an inferior Scotland side in isolation may not necessarily guarantee a deep run in the tournament, but Germany barely had to break a sweat at times.
Fluid and smooth on the attack, Germany were a sight to behold, and it was a fabulous way to kickstart their ambition to raise the Euros for the fourth time.
Toni Kroos and Ilkay Gundogan linked up well as Germany sliced through Scotland at will, and it was their biggest-ever win at the Euros.
In going 3-0 up at the break, it was only the third time that a team had a three-goal advantage before the end of the first half.
Hungary, on the other hand, were rather subdued against Switzerland, and they will need to regroup before taking on Germany.
Germany have shaded the head-to-head with 13 wins garnered from 27 meetings, and they have netted six more times (74), and there could well be a gulf in quality between the two sides.
Hungary will need to be more precise in possession, but I can see Germany picking them off.

Florian Wirtz to shine bright again
Against Scotland, Florian Wirtz proved that Germany’s future is very bright, and he turned in a mesmerising display.
He netted the opener and he became Germany’s third-youngest scorer at a European Championships after Gerd Muller and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
Wirtz was electric until he received a standing ovation when he came off just after the hour mark, but he is a typically industrious player.
Giving Wirtz too much time and space will cost Hungary, and he could make them pay.
To round things off, I like a match special, and odds of 10/1 for Wirtz to pull the trigger and score from outside the penalty area with William Hill seems too good to ignore.
