Girona v Arsenal Match Preview
Arsenal will be looking to complete a productive Champions League group phase campaign away to Girona on Wednesday evening.
To date, the Gunners’ seven games has yielded 16 points, and they have conceded just twice which is impressive.
They also warmed up for this game in the perfect manner, edging out a 1-0 win away to Wolves in the Premier League last weekend, albeit there was more than a slice of controversy over Myles Lewis-Skelly’s dismissal.
In stark contrast, Girona, who are Champions League debutants, have found things extremely tough going, winning just one of their matches, and they are heading for the trap door.
To compound matters, the Spanish outfit are likely to be bereft of Paulo Gazzaniga (formerly of Tottenham) and ex-Manchester United defender Daley Blind, who picked up muscle injuries against Rayo Vallecano.
Although it almost feels like a dead rubber given the current positions of both sides, for Arsenal, it is anything but. I’ve swooped across the betting markets and handpicked a couple of tips to support my Girona v Arsenal predictions.
Arsenal to sparkle once again
On Matchday 7, Arsenal were barely pushed by Dinamo Zagreb as they set the agenda and surged to a 3-0 win.
The victory has put them on the brink of qualification for an automatic Round of 16 spot, and crunching through the numbers, 16 points or more should be plenty to bypass the knockout round.
Although there has been lively debate about the Gunners’ need for a new striker, they haven’t had any problem sharing the goals.
This will be Girona’s first clash against Arsenal in Europe, but they have already faced English opposition this term in the shape of Liverpool, slipping to a 1-0 defeat.
An area of concern for Girona will be the negative difference between their goals scored in the Champions League (three) and their xG (8.9) which shows they haven’t been able to take their chances when they have come their way.
Arguably what was more surprising was that the previous round of Champions League games only resulted in four away wins.
A draw should be enough for Arsenal to get over the line, but I think they will sparkle and claim another comfortable win. I’m drawn to the Arsenal to win to nil line which is trading at 2/1 with Betano.
Gunners to have something left in the tank
While things were slightly rocky in January in terms of results in the domestic cup competitions, the Gunners normally come up with the answer when stiff questions are asked of them.
A bone of contention has been the chances they have created from open play, but apart from a 1-0 reverse against Inter earlier in the competition, Arsenal have rarely looked troubled on the continent.
Although over 60% of Arsenal’s away goals (7/11) have been scored by three players called Gabriel — three by Gabriel Jesus, three by Gabriel Martinelli and one by Gabriel the defender — they are dangerous from set pieces and could be too much for Girona to handle.
To round things off, I’ve jumped on the Correct Score market. Arsenal to win 2-0 seems reasonable even if it comes with a slightly dubious 15/2 price at Paddy Power.
