India v England Preview
England kept India at arm’s length on Tuesday, beating them by 26 runs as they successfully defended 172.
Ben Duckett impressed with an opening 51 before Jamie Overton claimed three wickets with the ball.
England continue to be so hard to predict. When you think they’ll win, they throw in a wobbler of a performance and lose and then all of a sudden comes a win from nowhere.
If they’re going to win the Champions Trophy next month, for example, they simply have to find some consistency quickly.
With that in mind, and given we have interest on England to win this series from our pre-tournament selection, I think it’s wise to take a watching brief in this game regarding the result and look for value elsewhere.
Believe in Brydon and it’s VaVa Varun
Just before we get onto a couple of individuals, a William Hill price of 13/10 on England to score over 89.5 runs in their first 10 overs has caught my eye.
That’s not something England have achieved yet in the series, but they have gone close despite losing early wickets. They were 87-3 after 10 last time out.
There have been a couple of examples of big totals in recent internationals at Pune, and if they can keep wickets in hand and get Phil Salt going after a poor start to his series then that bet could be a winner.
England quick Brydon Carse brought us home a 3/1 shot in him to take two wickets or more in Rajkot. Now, he’s down to 13/8 with bet365 to achieve the same feat in Pune. But, given his form this winter, I still think that offers value.
Durham’s Carse has taken 36 wickets in nine appearances for England this winter, including a warm-up game in New Zealand. The majority of those appearances have been in Test Matches, but in two T20Is over the last week he has taken five wickets.
With quality spin on both sides - India’s Varun Chakravarthy and England’s Adil Rashid to name two - betway’s 11/5 on there to be over 0.5 stumpings in the match is something I think’s worthwhile siding with.
Chakravarthy must be in the form of his life. He has taken 10 wickets in three matches in this series, including 5-24 in Rajkot, and has three five-wicket hauls in six matches in January for India and Tamil Nadu in either 20-over or 50-over cricket.
He has returned us a couple of winners in the last two games, and I just don’t see any reason to change.
He is 7/2 with betway, via their Player Props section, to take three or more wickets in the match.
To finish this T20I betting tips preview, I can’t shake the feeling that England’s wicketkeeper-opener Salt is too good to continue the recent run of poor form he’s been on.
He had a brief period in the UAE ILT20 franchise competition before heading to India. After an opening score of 71 not out for the Abu Dhabi KnightRiders, he posted 2 and 2 and has followed it up with scores of 0, 4 and 5 in this India series.
Chasing Salt success has been a regular for me in various previews in the last couple of years, and I’m backing him to come good. Betfair have him at 4/1 to be England’s top run-scorer in this match.
