Before last Saturday’s visit of Tottenham to the Etihad, the consensus was that surely Manchester City would return to winning ways at the expense of Ange Postecoglou’s men. Unfortunately for the defending Premier League champions, further defeat ended up being even more expensive.
Not only was it a second recent defeat to Spurs in all competitions, but it was also an emphatic 4-0 loss on home soil and not only was it both those factors, by the end of the weekend it was also further distance between Liverpool and themselves.
With the Merseyside men edging past Southampton at St Mary’s less than 24 hours later, the gap between the top two now stands at eight points and although we have been here many times before, the overriding feeling from Saturday is that City looked as normal as everyone else.
Whereas defeat in the past would be a rare occurrence, there was always a sense that the superheroes simply had an off day. Now the same bunch of superheroes seem simply mortal on the field of play.
Something that Spurs may have already sensed before their trip to Manchester, something that Feyenoord will be aware of before they arrive on Tuesday but even with that knowledge, this City group should not be written off just yet.
The absence of Rodri is the main narrative surrounding this huge dip in form, but manager Guardiola has still managed to assemble a squad that is dripping with talent and that talent has to start to showing its worth as soon as possible.
Not only because of the embarrassment of Saturday’s mauling but also within the context of the new Champions League format and after suffering a loss to Sporting in one of Ruben Amorim’s last acts before his move to the red half of Manchester, City currently find themselves in 10th.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips and I think Tuesday should serve as the ideal warmup for Sunday’s heavyweight clash with Liverpool and with this in mind, I am backing a home win by a margin of two goals at odds of 10/3.
In addition to this, I do not fancy the hosts to keep a clean sheet and with Feyenoord getting on the scoresheet at least once, the correct score with the two-goal margin also applied points to a 3-1 home win at odds of 9/1.
