While the fact that Real Madrid arrive in Manchester having picked up just one league point from their last six is far from irrelevant and although they followed up their recent 1-0 defeat to Espanyol with a 1-1 draw with crosstown rivals Atletico, that point was still rather important.
That point meant that Carlo Ancelotti’s men stay top of the table and after sharing the points with their neighbours. That point also means the Santiago Bernabeu outfit stay a point clear of the side they just halved local bragging rights with.
Now though, nothing can be shared and there is no margin for error. The safety net of the extended league phase has disappeared, now the level of intensity must increase as much as the scrutiny increases with it.
While the scrutiny will come from who eventually comes out on top and moves into the Round of 16. The two sides have met in some in the Round of 16 or later in each of the last three seasons, one of these sides will not even get that far in 2024/25.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with City not being able to keep clean sheets, I think Real Madrid will not only find the net but also find a first leg advantage. No clean sheets from either side though, as I am backing the away win and both teams to score at odds of 7/2 with William Hill.
In addition to this, I am going to opt for a correct score bet and although away goals have no additional value these days, there is plenty of value in backing the 2-1 away win. This tie is known for its goals, this outcome is priced at odds of 10/1 with bet365.
