Manchester United v Rangers Match Preview
As we prepare for the penultimate matchday of this season’s Europa League league phase, both Manchester United and Rangers currently find themselves within the top eight – a berth that would be good enough for automatic progress to the Round of 16.
Reasons to be cheerful if you are a supporter of either outfit but also reason to be fearful at the same time and with at least one of these sides set to drop points after their meeting on Thursday, the complexion of the 36-team table could soon change considerably.
As things stand before the meeting at Old Trafford, it is United who have the slight advantage when it comes to standing. Ruben Amorim’s men possess seventh place with 12 points to their name, Philippe Clement’s men a position and a point worse off.
While United were certainly worse off at the weekend and although there was an element of optimism beginning to appear at the Theatre of Dreams after getting the better of Arsenal in the FA Cup the weekend before, their performance at home to Brighton was closer to a nightmare.
Once again Andre Onana has to take culpability due to error between the sticks but if you are apportioning blame after the Seagulls’ most recent success over United, then many outfield players will have been just as guilty.
That defeat means United currently sit 13th in the Premier League and with European qualification looking less of a possibility through direct qualification, it may need silverware to return the Red Devils back to the continent at the start of next season.
As for opponents Rangers, one could argue that they have saved some of their best performances of the season so far for the Europa League and with them currently sitting 13 points off the Scottish Premiership pace you can begin to understand why.
Admittedly the Ibrox outfit have found an element of domestic form in recent weeks, and this coupled with Aberdeen’s recent collapse has seen the blue half of Glasgow move into second in the standings. Then again, second is surely the bare minimum when it comes to Scottish football.
The bare minimum and most likely where Rangers finish again at the end of the season and with the title race all but run when it comes to action north of the border, Thursday’s visitors may be in a position to put more of their eggs in a Europa League basket.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips, and I think Rangers can get something out of this or at the very least be competitive. Therefore, I am backing them on a +1 handicap at 7/4 with bet365. A win or draw wins you money, a defeat by a single goal will return your stake.
In addition to this, I am going to shine a light on James Tavernier and with his scoring powers waning slightly, he is at least in a position to turn provider. With this in mind, I am backing the Rangers defender to assist a goal at odds of 9/1.
