Next England Manager Odds: Tuchel favourite as Carsley drops out of race

Thomas Tuchel has emerged as the clear favourite to take over from Gareth Southgate in the latest next England manager odds.
The German has been out of work since leaving Bayern Munich in the summer and could find himself in the Wembley hotseat after Lee Carsley appeared to rule himself out of the running.

Next England Manager Odds: The Candidates
Here's a little bit more about each candidate currently in the running for the next England manager according to bet365's latest odds.
Thomas Tuchel
High-profile jobs and pressure situations are not new to Tuchel, having had spells with Chelsea, Bayern Munich, PSG and Borussia Dortmund in a storied managerial career.
He won the Champions League while at Stamford Bridge and has made no secret of his desire to return to the UK, although he has been heavily linked with the Manchester United job amid Erik ten Hag's struggles.
Tuchel is widely respected as an astute tactician and an innovator, and his standing as one of the world's top coaches could be seen as the ideal move to take England to the next level.
He has an established relationship with Harry Kane having worked together in Munich, and with him currently out of work the only barrier to an appointment would be due to him not being English - something the FA have prioritised in the past.
Lee Carsley
The FA were clearly hoping they could quietly usher in the Lee Carsley-era in the past couple of international breaks, and continuing the line of succession started by Southgate in working with the under-21s first.
Carsley's work at that level has been good - they won the Euros last year - and after Spain's success at senior level with a similar method, it was expected that they would go the same way this time.
However after an encouraging start in which he made several high-profile selection calls and implemented a noticeable difference in style, the home defeat to Greece raised a lot of doubts, not least from the man himself who came out with a couple of confusing comments in the media.
It's not even clear whether Carsley wants the role on a full-time basis and his inability to deal effectively with the media will go down as a big cross against his name, while the tactical plan that backfired against Greece was another mark against him.
His odds are drifting, but if he goes back down a level it wouldn't be a surprise to see him return after the World Cup.
Pep Guardiola
Not much needs to be said about Guardiola's credentials for the job, there is scarcely anyone who has ever been more qualified for any job in world football.
However he has yet to manage at international level, and given the intensity with which he manages it would be interesting to see how he copes with having access to his players on such an irregular basis.
The Manchester City manager is only contracted until the end of the current season and with so much in the air about City's Premier League future, it could be the ideal time for him to part ways.
He has said before that he is keen to manage an international team and with his contract running down, it does strengthen the possibility that the FA could lure one of the greatest managers of all time.
Eddie Howe
When Southgate announced his resignation, Eddie Howe was immediately installed as the favourite for the job but his odds have slowly been lengthening as the club season has gone on.
Howe has consistently committed his immediate future to Newcastle and to be honest, it is hard to see that changing any time soon.
He would probably be a good appointment and in line with the FA's way of thinking, but it feels like this isn't his time and I would expect him to remain around fourth or fifth in the betting lists, unless something changes at Newcastle first.
Graham Potter
Potter was the man who jumped to my mind as the favourite as soon as Southgate went, but it's pretty instructive that he remains as far out as 8/1.
The former Chelsea manager is a forward-thinking, well-travelled and ambitious manager and it should not be forgotten how good a job he did with Brighton, and even the job he did at Chelsea is probably under-estimated.
He has been out of work for around 18 months though and if the FA have not sought to take him on already, it is hard to see how anything could have changed in the interim.
A stint on Monday Night Football suggested he is ready to take his next steps into management and he did tease at his interest in the role but it's hard to see it happening after two or three months of not being approached - though he would probably still be the man I would plump for.
Next England Manager Tip
Even though it would seem unlikely at this point, I would still tip Potter as the surprise choice for the FA.
I think they have been waiting for Tuchel or Guardiola but I think ultimately will miss out on both, leaving it between Carsley and Potter for the job and after his struggles this week, I find it really hard to see Carsley being trusted to take the side forward and I don't think he wants it anyway.
