For the first time in the four-belt era, the undisputed world heavyweight championship will be decided in the United Kingdom this weekend, as Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois meet for a mouth-watering rematch inside Londonโs Wembley Stadium.
Usyk, 38, brings his WBA, WBC, WBO and Ring Magazine titles to north London, looking to add Daniel Duboisโs IBF strap to his collection again, a title he was forced to vacate after beating Tyson Fury last year.
Dubois, 27, is in the form of his life.
A winning run over Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic and Anthony Joshua has seen the Briton skyrocket his fortunes following an original loss to Usyk in 2023, earning a rematch with the Ukrainian in a chance to settle an old score.
Usyk won the previous argument via ninth-round KO in Wroclaw, Poland, but the bout was marred in controversy.
Usyk dominated a majority of the August contest, but round five is where youโll find an array of different opinions. Dubois threw a body shot that arguably landed low, with Usyk immediately wincing, bending over. The Ukrainian fell to the canvas, but the referee did not start a count, having ruled the punch as landing below the belt.
The champion was then given five minutes to recover from the shot, as per the rules, and any momentum that Dubois felt he should have had from that punch had disappeared.
Usykโs team argued it was low and Duboisโ team argue it was a legal shot, meaning Saturday nightโs rematch has a guaranteed narrative in the classic tale of โrepeat or revengeโ.
Since this bout, Usyk has gone on to win back-to-back fights over Tyson Fury, securing his spot in the upper echelons of the pound-for-pound rankings and looking unstoppable in doing so.
Seven of Usykโs last eight wins have come against Britons and he will ring walk inside Wembley Stadium as a big favourite in boxing betting markets to make it eight in nine against โDynamiteโ Dubois.
Oleksandr Usyk (23-0, 14KO)
There is no questions that, at 38, Oleksandr Usyk is edging towards the end of his career, but thatโs not to say he is looking any worse for it.
The Ukrainian southpaw has amassed a 23-fight unbeaten record as a pro, become undisputed at cruiserweight and heavyweight and cemented his name as an all-time great in the sport.
And the โCatโ is looking to build on his dominance over British fighters on Saturday in securing his third two-fight victory over British world champions.
Both Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua have suffered back-to-back defeats over Usyk, and Dubois could be next in line following on from his ninth-round KO loss to the Ukrainian back in 2023.
Usyk has fought every style in the sport and come away with victories in every scenario, but perhaps he hasnโt faced such a heavy-hitting heavyweight in the form that Dubois finds himself in at the moment.
Usyk has proven he can ride the most vicious of attacks and come out unscathed, Dubois is a wrecking-ball puncher in the division and will no doubt be targeting the somewhat questionable body of the Ukrainian.ย
This is, of course, hypothetical. Weโve still not seen Usyk lose in a professional boxing ring, so anything but a win for the champion on Saturday night will be seen as a big shock in the heavyweight division.
Daniel Dubois (22-2, 21KO)
Youโd struggle to name a fighter who had a better 2024 than Daniel Dubois.
The 27-year-old Briton beat Filip Hrgovic and Anthony Joshua in contrasting styles, securing himself the IBF world heavyweight championship in the process.
And after losses to Joe Joyce and Usyk earlier in his pro career, itโs a testament to his resilience that he has manoeuvred himself into a shot at becoming undisputed.
Duboisโ USP is that he hits like a truck and has one of the most punishing jabs in the division. Heโs not the most fleet-footed, but when he is able to throw combinations freely then his opponents usually struggle to escape unscathed.
Dubois has the advantage of sharing close to nine rounds with Usyk already, and feels that this knowledge will enable him to make history on Saturday night in front of his home faithful.
โYou could say that but I donโt want to even put it down to just him being an old man,โ Dubois told Tuesdayโs assembled media on whether itโs his time to shine.
โIโve got to prove myself and bring chaos in the ring. What I bring, the force I have will be whatโs needed, really. But I stand more to gain, heโs at the end of his career. I stand more to gain from a win. Getting all the belts, thatโs a start for me, really.โ
Prediction
Despite the dramatic fifth round in 2023, it was pretty much one-sided traffic the last time Usyk and Dubois met.
Sure, Dubois has improved greatly since then, but Usyk has also navigated two historic wins over Tyson Fury.
Dubois will always have a punchers chance in every fight he goes into, but Usykโs movement and speed will probably prove too much for the Londoner once again.
Dubois will be dangerous in the first six rounds, but Usyk is a master in controlling the latter stages of fights and winning the important rounds.
Usyk should beat Dubois again, and could possibly stop him in the championship rounds.ย
