Scotland v Hungary Match Preview
Scotland stand on the brink of history as they face Hungary, knowing that a win would almost certainly secure their passage from the group stages for the first time.
Steve Clarke’s side delivered a much-improved performance against Switzerland and came close to winning, despite the Swiss having two goals disallowed and missing two clear chances.
The Scots showed far more grit, effort, and commitment compared to their disappointing opener against Germany.
As usual, they will have plenty of support, with huge numbers of the Tartan Army travelling to cheer them on.
Hungary were on a ten-match unbeaten run heading into their final pre-tournament friendly against Ireland, but they lost that match and have looked well below par in defeats to Switzerland and Germany so far at Euro 2024.
However, a win for Marco Rossi’s side could still see them grab a place in the knockout stages, but history is against The Magyars - they haven’t won any of their last eight games at the finals of the European Championships.
One bright spark for Hungary so far at Euro 2024 has been the form of captain Dominik Szoboszla, and Scotland will need to be wary of the Liverpool player’s quality at set pieces.
Scotland the value bet
Scotland were impressive against Switzerland, and it’s hard to see why they are the outsiders with the bookmakers for Sunday’s clash in Stuttgart.
Steve Clarke’s side improved against Switzerland and they can build on that display in this must-win game against a Hungary side that have struggled against counter-attacking sides recently.
Their recent 2-1 loss to Ireland epitomised this, with the Irish hitting them on the counter numerous times - a match designed to give them a taste of what they are set to face against Scotland.
Rampaging Robertson
Robertson finished the season strongly for Liverpool, scoring in two of his final three games for his club, and he looked back to his best against Switzerland on Wednesday evening.
He’s a key attacking outlet for Scotland, and he will fancy his chances against a Hungary defence that’s struggled down its right side so far in the tournament.
Swiss left wing-back Michel Aebischer scored and provided against them in their opening game, and Robertson looks overpriced to register at least two shots in Sunday’s vital clash.
