New Zealand v England Match Preview
The last time England won an away series - against Pakistan in December 2022 - they did so 3-0. And that is the aim for England this weekend as they wrap up their successful tour of New Zealand.
Ben Stokes’s side have been excellent over the last couple of weeks, winning Tests by eight wickets in Christchurch and, most recently, by 323 runs in Wellington.
With all the inconsistencies of late for England, and New Zealand’s recent 3-0 win away in India, I didn’t see this one coming. But fair play, the visitors have looked head and shoulders above the Kiwis.
And you would have to back them to put the cherry on top of the cake in Hamilton. They are 20/21 to win on the North Island with StarSports amongst a couple of other firms.
He’s no average Joe
Joe Root continues to amaze. Dating back to the summer series in Sri Lanka, he has scored four hundreds in his last seven Tests, including a career-best 262 against Pakistan in Multan in October.
He features in a couple of my bets for this series finale preview, including a long shot.
But I will start with a couple of Kiwis.
Seamer Nathan Smith has taken three wickets and four wickets in the first innings of the first two Tests. He seems like one of those cricketers who just keeps coming at you.
I like betway’s 6/4 - available via their Player Props section - on him to take three or more first-innings wickets.
New Zealand captain Tom Latham has struggled for form in the early stages of this series, with his 47 in the first innings of the first Test his only score above 25.
I just have a feeling he’s going to come good in this Test and would be siding with Betano’s 9/4 on the left-hander - a recent overseas recruit for Warwickshire in 2025 - to score a fifty in the first innings.
Siding with Root realistically needs little explanation. There’s little doubt in my mind that he will, as long as his body plays ball, finish his career as Test Cricket’s leading run-scorer.
The 33-year-old has 12,886 runs to his name and is chasing down top dog Sachin Tendulkar (15,921).
He is 10/3 with Paddy Power to be England’s top first-innings run-scorer at Seddon Park, which incidentally is a postage stamp venue.
And who would bet against this betfair boosted long shot involving Root, which will be our last tip of the series. This would be a nice and early Christmas present if it came in.
For England to win and for Root to be the player-of-the-match, you can get a juicy 20/1.
