Wimbledon Betting Tips Preview
This sizzling summer of sport continues with the introduction of Wimbledon sandwiched in between the Euros, the T20 World Cup and the Olympics.
Going for gold again is Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, who beat Novak Djokovic in last year’s final. He is a realistic winner once more.
On the women’s side of the draw, it’s not quite as realistic to expect that Czech Marketa Vondrousova will defend the title she won in beating Ons Jabeur.
There are a number of stronger contenders for that crown.
I expect Alcaraz to defend the men’s title and follow up his win in Paris last month. He is second favourite behind world number one Jannik Sinner, who won a grass court title at Halle last weekend.
BetMGM have Alcaraz at 5/2, a price I would be taking.
Again, with the women, the bookies are split on the favourite. World Number one Iga Swiatek is understandably up there given her form. But she has a poor record on grass having never made it beyond the quarter-finals here amidst five Grand Slam titles elsewhere.
Alongside her sits world number two Aryna Sabalenka, a semi-finalist twice at the All England Club.
Now, I’m not so sure about Swiatek, especially given there is a greater priority on her mind in an Olympic gold medal later this summer on the clay courts of Roland Garros.
Sabalenka would be my choice. I love watching her play, and she’s done ok at Wimbledon having reached the semi-finals in 2021 and again last year. Third time lucky? My suspicion is yes.
She’s on offer with at 15/4 with SportingIndex.
If you fancy a win double of Alcaraz and Sabalenka, it’s available at 14.16/1 with Betfred.
Car-win and not Car-loss for Alcaraz, while Jessi-can
To continue this Wimbledon betting tips preview, we will start with betfair’s 13/10 on our men’s title fancy Carlos Alcaraz reaching the final for the second year running.
There has to be serious doubt over whether Novak Djokovic can reach a fifth straight final having had knee surgery only three weeks ago. It would be wise to swerve him this year. If he does go on and win the title, it would surely be his greatest triumph.
In the women’s event, betfair has another price of interest.
That is their 6/4 on Aryna Sabalenka to reach the final.
Quarter winners could yield home success
These following bets are for players to win their quarters of the draw. So, for this to be a winner, you need said player to reach the semi-finals.
And I’ve picked out three which are of significant interest, including one which would raise the roof if it came to pass.
The first is Polish world number five Hubert Hurkacz to win Quarter 4 of the men’s draw. He’s second favourite for this market behind Novak Djokovic at 10/3 with betfair. Hurkacz is a big bruising server - the world number seven - who reached the final at Halle last week. He has all the tools to do well at Wimbledon, where he was a semi-finalist in 2021.
I reckon Katie Boulter could have a real chance of progression. Do I expect her to win it? No. But she could go deep to lift the spirits of an expectant home crowd should Sir Andy Murray’s Wimbledon farewell turn into a damp squib.
She’s in Quarter 2 and is fourth favourite to win that and reach the last four, at 11/1.
Ahead of her in the pecking order are Elena Rybakina, Ons Jabeur and Jessica Pegula. There’s no one there who would frighten me.
Boulter has won two titles since March, including at Nottingham on grass earlier this month.
In Quarter 1, Iga Swiatek is the favourite for that. But there are doubts over her ability on grass. So why not have a couple of quid on Yulia Putintseva at 20/1.
She really impressed me when winning at Birmingham last week. Ok, she may be the world number 34, but it’s not uncommon for an outsider to go deep in the women’s draw.
Round One acca
I will finish this preview by giving you a five-fold round one match accumulator across both the men’s and women’s draws.
Bet365 are offering 6.07/1 on Sebastian Korda to beat Alejandro Davidovich-Fokina, for Jordan Thompson to beat Pavel Kotov and Yulia Putintseva to beat Angelique Kerber.
That’s added to 2-0 straight sets victories for Katie Boulter over Tatjana Maria and Jasmine Paolini over Sara Sorribes Tormo.
