Wrexham vs Cardiff Tips, Predictions & Betting Odds - EFL Cup
Craig Jones
Had you asked me about this game a few weeks ago, I'd have said it was ripe for an upset, and Cardiff to come here and win.
Two things to take from that. Firstly, how far Wrexham have progressed and Cardiff have regressed for me to say Cardiff winning at Wrexham is an upset.
And secondly, a nod to just how much both sides have seen a change in fortunes recently.
Whatever side of the fence you're on, this promises to be a great occasion, and below I've got three tips for the game exclusively here on Free Bets as I look to find the best value from the markets.
Wrexham vs Cardiff Tips
Before getting to my Wrexham vs Cardiff tips, a look at the odds and you'll see below that betting sites have made Wrexham the favourites to win this clash, but all three outcomes are relatively close in the betting.
Tip 1: Wrexham to Win
It's 23 years since these two last met, so we can forget looking at the head to head records but recent form is definitely a factor in my thinking.
After losing three of their first five in the Championship, Wrexham have adapted well. It may not always be pretty, but they've become tough to beat.
That's led to them losing just one of their last eight in all competitions, and that was a 1-0 narrow defeat away at Stoke. Of the seven they've not lost, just three have been wins, with draws in the other four, so there's still work to do, but it's much, much better from Wrexham.
Cardiff are going the opposite way, and haven't been as impressive recently as they were at the start of the season.
It's still good, but with their squad in League One, it should be. The better sides have done well against Cardiff, Bolton beat them at the weekend, Bradford have before, and Stockport got a draw against them.
These are the games Cardiff should be winning, but they aren't, and from the games I've seen them play, they're lacking something compared to August, it's as though things just aren't clicking.
Still a good side, but it's a good League One side up against what's becoming a decent Championship mid table side that are hard to beat, and while the emotions can sometimes throw the formbook out, I'll back Wrexham to win this.
Tip 2: Half Time Score - Wrexham 1-0 Cardiff
The recent Wrexham games have all been pretty low scoring, you have to go back to September to find the last time they were involved in a game with more than two goals.
Add into this the fact that we've got a big game here, plenty at stake for fans and players, plus it's on TV which I always think makes games a little tighter for teams that aren't regulars on TV.
On the Cardiff side, further to their drop in form that I've already spoken about, they've been kept off the scoresheet in three of their last five games in all competitions.
It's all pointing me towards a low scoring game, and in particular, low scoring first half. But Wrexham have scored early goals in the last two games they've played, the only goals they've scored in those games too.
I'll side with Wrexham leading the game 1-0 at half time.
Tip 3: Josh Windass First Goal & Wrexham Win 1-0
Rounding off the preview, I'm putting everything I've already mentioned above, and adding in Josh Windass as the first goal scorer.
The former Sheffield Wednesday man moved to Wrexham in the summer, a key addition for them, and so far he's done well with four goals in 10 games across all competitions.
He's a strong goal threat, and likes to attack late from deep, the kind of player that does really well at finding pockets of space to hurt the opposition.
Scorer of the Wrexham goal at the weekend, with the boost in confidence from that under his belt, I'll take Windass to score the first goal here, and combine it with Wrexham to win 1-0 for a 27/1 bet.
