Austria Euro 2024 Top Tip

Austria have been handed a rather tough Euro 2024 group as they are set to face off with both France and the Netherlands.

On paper, France and Netherlands are expected to take the top two spots in Group D. However, if Austria can manage a draw vs the Netherlands and beat the final team in Group D by a bigger margin than the Dutch outfit, they could secure 2nd place.

But even if that does not happen, Austria still have a good chance of making it into the last-16 due to the third-place rule. Beyond that, though, Austria are not expected to make it much deeper into the knockout phase.

Austria’s Road to Qualification

For a team that have previously struggled in qualifying, Austria were quite impressive on their road to Euro 2024.

Austria were drawn in Group F alongside Belgium, Sweden, Azerbaijan and Estonia.

Ralf Rangnick’s side secured 2nd place in the group, finishing only one point Belgium after winning six, drawing one (vs Belgium) and losing one (vs Belgium).

When are Austria’s Euro 2024 games?

Austria will play three Euro 2024 group games. The opponents and dates can be found below:

  • Group C - Austria vs France, June 17.
  • Group C - Poland vs Austria, June 21.
  • Group C - Netherlands vs Austria, June 25.

Austria’s Road to the Final

Anyone who is looking at backing Austria for success will want to know how they can get to the final. Their paths are determined by where they finish in the group, either first, second or third - and here are the various permutations that they will have to navigate.

Round of 16

  • If Austria win Group D - Their last 16 game will be against the runner up of Group F, which will most likely be Czech Republic. This game will be played on June 30.
  • If Austria are runners up in Group D - Their last 16 game will come against the runner-up of Group E - most likely Slovakia or Romania. This game will be played on July 2.
  • If Austria finish third in Group D (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Their last 16 game will be against either the winner of Group E - Belgium, Slovakia, Romania, TBD - or the winner of Group C - England, Denmark, Slovenia, Serbia. These games will be played on June 29 or July 2.

Quarter-Finals

  • If Austria win Group D - They will face the winner of the last-16 clash between the Group E winner vs one of the third-place teams from Group A/B/C/D. On paper, their most likely opponent will be Belgium. This game will be played on July 6.
  • If Austria are runners up in Group D - They will face the winner of the last-16 clash between the Group F winner vs one of the 3rd-place teams from Group A/B/C/. Their most likely opponent would be Portugal (coming in as Group F winners). This game will be played on July 5.
  • If Austria finish third in Group D (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - They will either face the winner of the last-16 clash between Group A’s winner and C’s runners-up or the winner of the game between Group A’s runner-up and Group B’s runner-up. These games will be played on July 5 or July 6.

Semi-Finals

  • If Austria win Group D - Many assumptions have to be made by the time we get to this stage, but if things go as expected, Austria will face either England, Switzerland or Italy in the semi-final. This game will be played on July 10.
  • If Austria are runners up in Group D - Again, a lot of assumptions need to be made here but Austria’s most likely opponents are Germany or Spain. This game will be played on July 9.
  • If Austria finish third in Group D (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Given how the third-place teams are put into the knockout phase, Austria could face any of the teams mentioned above. These games will be played on July 9 or July 10.

Final

  • If Austria win Group D - On the opposing side of the draw in this scenario would be the likes of Germany, Spain, or Portugal - of said clubs, Spain seem the most likely to make it to the final. The final will be played on July 14.
  • If Austria are runners up in Group D - On the opposing side of the draw in this scenario would be the likes of Belgium, France, England or Italy.
  • If Austria finish third in Group D (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Austria could be put onto either side of the draw depending on how they rank among the third-place teams, meaning they could face any of the big hitters we have mentioned above.

Austria’s Key Players

David Alaba - Due to Austria’s lack of overall squad quality, a player like David Alaba would be crucial at Euro 2024. The defender is currently Austria captain and while he generally plays his club football with Real Madrid at centre-back, he can operate at left-back and in midfield as well. He has played in all of these positions for his country, scoring 15 and assisting an impressive 21 while doing so.

This type of player would be incredibly useful for Ralf Ragnrick in Germany, but Alaba ruptured his ACL earlier this year, meaning he is in a race against time to be fit for the Euros.

Marko Arnautovic - Arnautovic will head into Euro 2024 as a 35-year-old. Despite his age, the striker remains a key figure in the Austrian national side. The former Stoke hitman has 36 goals and 26 assists for his country, placing him second in their all-time top scorers list. Arnautovic has also been crucial in Austria making it to the last three European Championships - netting 15 and assisting five in 30 qualifiers.

Marcel Sabitzer - If Alaba does miss Euro 2024, the onus will be on Marcel Sabitzer to provide much of Austria’s creativity at the tournament. After floundering for a few years with Bayern Munich and Manchester United, Sabizter is playing regular football again with Borussia Dortmund. This increased game time has led to an uptick in his club and international form, with Sabitzer providing four goals and two assists in Euro 2024 qualifying.
