Birmingham v Huddersfield Match Preview
After winning six games on the bounce for the first time in 39 years, Birmingham are in the usual position of being top of the league – not a sight their fanbase has become accustomed to.
The only points Blues have dropped all season came in a 1-1 draw with Reading on the opening day, and while they’ve been tested by opponents like the Royals, Leyton Orient and Peterborough, especially early on in games, they’ve always had the quality in reserve to change matches that aren’t going to plan.
Nervy starts might be the one reason to doubt Chris Davies’ side, who have a goalkeeper in Bailey Peacock-Pharrell who has made mistakes and seems to be struggling for confidence.
As such, there’s a chance that Huddersfield see Tuesday night as an opportunity to respond defiantly to four straight league defeats, and reaffirm their promotion credentials.
It’s possible, bearing in mind they tend to be better in games that lend themselves to pressing rather than passing, as esteemed journalist Steven Chicken put it in ‘We Are Terriers’.
However, this Birmingham team can fall a goal or two behind without the fanbase worrying about losing the game, such is the confidence in what’s in reserve.
And Davies may look to use those reserves in this first three league-game week of the season, with the former Leicester coach having the luxury of bringing in Scott Wright and Keshi Anderson, rewarding the duo for their impact on Saturday as half-time subs.
Marc Leonard and Alfie May, meanwhile, made League One’s Team of the Year last season and both will be itching to start to prove their worth, while Blues have already settled on their shape.
They’re a 4-2-3-1 on the teamsheet, but right-back Taylor Gardner-Hickman pushes high and wide in possession, as Alex Cochrane tucks into a back-three, creating a 3-4-2-1 shape with Willum Willumsson causing havoc in the hole.
Birmingham don’t necessarily have to start the £20M forward they have in League One, despite Jay Stansfield’s start of three goals in three – the fact they could conceivably bring him off the bench highlights their embarrassment of riches.
