Leeds back in the Premier League?
Q: Let's start with the big Championship game of the weekend. Leeds got a dramatic win over Sheffield United on Monday, did you manage to watch it?
Yeah, I watched it. I think after the first 25 minutes, you were like, uh-oh, this could be a long night. But no, I thought they were brilliant from about half an hour onwards.
You just look at the players they can bring on. Gnonto comes on and has an impact and you always knew the bench would play a role. Tanaka has probably been Leeds’ best player this season, he scored at such a crucial time but it was just a great advert for EFL. I thought it was two very good teams going toe to toe.
Q: Yeah, you mentioned how strong the bench is. Does Daniel Farke deserve quite a bit of credit for the way that he changed things around by bringing on Rothwell and Joseph quite early on and turning the game?
Definitely, I give him credit because he doesn't usually make changes that early, and I think that's people when they get frustrated with Daniel Farke, it's always on a 70-minute mark, but he did it earlier this time. He thought, ‘let me go for it’. And he didn't take off Piroe, he bought on Joseph and went more attacking and had a right go.
Sometimes the managers get criticized but I like to praise Daniel Farke and it's probably never easy with where he was sitting as well to be able to call the shots. So I thought it was a brilliant performance.
It did make me laugh though, Ampadu has got a knee injury and was sprinting down the line to celebrate! It can’t be that bad an injury!
Q: So that puts them in pretty good position to go up. If they are to go up how do you see that side currently in the Premier League next season, considering how much Championship teams have struggled in the last couple of years?
No, they would need to strengthen for sure, without a shadow of doubt, and I think Leeds have owners that will strengthen.
They're not going to make the same mistakes like some of these teams that have made now in the Premier League in particular someone like Southampton, you have to spend the money to be able to compete.
The gap is getting bigger as you can see what's happening this season - even though it's not over yet in the Premier League for the relegation battle - but the gap's getting bigger. And if you don't spend then it’s very hard to try and compete because everyone else is spending and then you're going to fall away.
But I do think they've got players there that can play in the Premier League for sure. But you need to add at least five or six players to make it competitive.
They definitely will strengthen because a club like Leeds, you speak to everyone and everyone wants to see a club like Leeds in the Premier League.
The fan base is fantastic. You want to see Leeds United survive in the Premier League, but they will have to strengthen.
Q: What is it about Leeds that makes them such a good addition to the Premier League?
The fans are brilliant and it's a hard place to go. Listen, the fans didn't like me when I played there, they always used to give me stick but I liked it there. You kind of play up to it because it's something that you look forward to. And I think when you're going and it's hostile and you know what the atmosphere is going to be like, then so be it.
But I just remember the times when Leeds were playing, when they had people like Viduka, Harry Kewell and people like that it was just fantastic watching them play. So you just want them to get back to those glory days. I just feel the club as a whole probably deserves it. And as I said, the fans are always involved in it and they deserve it.
It's a huge football club and you want to see the best football clubs playing in the best leagues so I hope they can do it. And I hope they survive next year if they do get promoted because it'll be good for the club.
Other Championship Contenders
Q: Taking Leeds out of it leaves Sheffield United, Burnley and Sunderland competing for the automatics. Who would you fancy out of those three to go on and do it?
I think Sunderland are out of it after their last two results, but between the other two, I think it's like a toss of a coin really like heads or tails, who's going to go up between the two of them for sure.
And then I think they play each other towards the end of April. That'd be a massive match, and in March, Sheffield United have Sheffield Wednesday in the Derby. Sheffield Wednesday ain't going to want to be doing Sheffield United any favors at all. So there's still a lot of football to go.
I always feel that the easter period is the pivotal part because you have a lot of games. And then that's where you can see it kind of panning out where everyone's going to finish.
Q: Marcus Edwards looked like he made a real difference for Burnley last week, he could be a decisive factor for them?
I think he gives them that X factor. I think a lot of people have been saying Burnley are struggling to score goals, but he creates goals. His first goal against Sheffield Wednesday is a fantastic finish.
And I think when someone comes in like that and gives the group a big lift in the attacking areas, every other player will get their mojo back and start scoring goals as well.
The goals have to be shared at Burnley and I think as Scott Parker was saying earlier, they're in a great position. They're not really worrying about other people. All he can do is take care of what he's doing at Burnley, which has been fantastic defensively, and now they’re getting the goals.
FA Cup Fifth Round
Q: FA Cup this weekend. There's probably none of the fixtures really stand out. They kind of look a little bit one-sided…
The main games I'll say that stand out is Newcastle v Brighton and Man Utd v Fulham.
They're the two games where you can't really call it. You probably think Fulham are the favourites to go to Old Trafford and beat them with the way Man United are playing at the moment and Fulham have been decent this season and then Newcastle v Brighton is a hard one. Brighton are on a good run.
There's a lot of good games that are fascinating games. Nottingham Forest v Ipswich is a hard one to call to which I'm going to on Monday, and Palace have a local derby against Millwall which should be tasty.
But you look at someone like Plymouth. They had a really good result, winning at home to Liverpool in the last round and if they were at home again this time against Manchester City, they would fancy it. But with it being at City, even with the form they’re in, you can’t quite see an upset happening there.
Q: Yeah Palace v Millwall is a nice one. A local game, Palace in good form and well-placed for another cup run after a big win midweek
I hope I'm not being disrespectful, but I hope they can keep getting good draws. If there's a few Championship teams that go through, then I hope they get a Championship team in the next round as well because if they can beat Millwall, then they're flying at the moment and a lot of teams won't want to play them.
The way they demolished Aston Villa on Tuesday, who are a good team who have been playing well, was fantastic. They created loads of chances and it could have been more. Glasner does take the cup games really seriously, so I don't think he'll make many changes for the weekend because he knows it's a London derby.
Q: How good for Eddie Nketiah is it to get on the scoresheet last night?
Oh, I was so happy. I messaged him yesterday. I was so happy for Eddie to get one. I did an interview with him about a month ago and you can see it was playing on his mind a bit and because he's always used to scoring goals he's probably never gone this long trying to get a goal. So it was brilliant.
It was in the right place, and that's what you want to see Nketiah do, get in and around the six-yard box. I've always said do your work inside the box.
It will be hard for him to get into the team but when he gets opportunities, if he does on Saturday, go and grab it with both hands and give the manager a headache. But I was so pleased that he managed to get his goal last night.
Champions League
Q: The next round of the Champions League starts next Tuesday, with Aston Villa and Arsenal in action on Tuesday and then Liverpool on Wednesday.
Starting with PSG v Liverpool, how do you see that game?
That's a hard game. They're in good form at the moment, PSG. In particular, Dembele. They've got a lot of youngsters who will make it a hard game for Liverpool.
And you know what? It's just crazy because you do well in the group stage and then it gets drawn out and you still get someone like PSG. Liverpool might as well not top the group!
I like the format, but I didn't like that. It's a tough game for Liverpool, I still think they are favourites but I won't rule out PSG. They have a lot of good attacking players, a good midfielder in Vitinho and talent like Doue and Barcola.
It's going to be a tough game for Liverpool, a really tough game, but I still make Liverpool favourites the form they're in at the moment.
I didn't know it was Wednesday. My son's got a big cup game so I’m probably going to have to record it and watch it later!
The second leg is at Anfield, so PSG need to get something to hold onto because with the form Liverpool are in at Anfield, they will be too strong.
Q: And then Bruges against Villa, obviously not a great result for Villa last night, but everything is on the Champions League this season
Brugge are a good team. I've seen them cause Man City a few problems but I think if you're Aston Villa, it's probably the draw that you would always wanted to have because I think it's a brilliant draw.
I think Villa might just be too strong for Club Brugges, but it will be difficult
When they get to Villa Park with the atmosphere and the crowd behind them, they’ll have too much.
Q: And then finally, PSV against Arsenal.
I watched PSV recently. Now, this is a tough one because PSV at home are very good.
Arsenal will win over two legs without a shadow of a doubt, but PSV at home, are a really good team. So I'm just going to go PSV just to win at home in the first leg but I think overall Arsenal will beat them over both legs.
PSV at home hard place to go can cause a lot of problems. The fans get involved, they've got a lot of good attacking players.
Birmingham v Wycombe
Q: Final thing I just wanted to ask you about is Birmingham v Wycombe this weekend?
What a game. Wycombe have done great since Matt Bloomfield left. We thought they might drop away but you look at it and you're thinking Luton will probably get relegated but Wycombe are still going really well.
It's a massive game because I think teams like Wrexham, Huddersfield Stockport, Charlton, will all be hoping that Birmingham wins because you're trying to catch the team that’s in second because let's be honest, none of them are going to catch Birmingham but they'll be hoping Birmingham can beat Wycombe and pull away.
But Wycombe, fair play to them. They are underdogs and don't have one of the biggest budgets, and are punching above their weight.
They're just a superb team they like they just know how to get results. It looks like there's a great togetherness there and they're just flying at the moment. Yeah, it's a tough one to call. It won't be a walkover for Birmingham.
Full credit must go to everyone at Wycombe and everyone involved because they are getting the results.
