England v Ireland Match Preview
England will be looking to secure promotion to Group A when they host Ireland on Sunday afternoon in their final Group B2 game.
Despite ringing in the changes for his penultimate game of the charge, Lee Carsley made amends as his youthful Three Lions exuded confidence and class, sweeping aside Greece 3-0 on Thursday evening.
Noni Madueke shone, providing an assist and creating havoc down the right channel, while Jude Bellingham’s swagger returned, albeit the 21-year-old’s effort which came off the post was credited as an own goal.
The signs look positive for Thomas Tuchel before he takes over the reins in January, and they are now level on points with Greece (12).
Ireland claimed a 1-0 win over Finland and avoided relegation, so there is little riding on the outcome of this game from their perspective.
But for England, the magnitude of this game can’t be overstated. Gaining promotion to the top league of the Nations League could provide some World Cup qualification assurances.
To guide you through, I have provided a match preview and supplied a couple of England v Ireland predictions.
Three Lions to purr once again
The shackles were released and there was an exuberance about how England acquitted themselves against Greece.
Harry Kane may have made some rather pointed remarks and veered away from the party line when addressing the number of player withdrawals from the England squad, but this seemed like a side honoured to represent their country.
As mentioned, Madueke asked constant questions of the Greek defence, England managed 23 touches inside the opposition box, and created plenty of opportunities.
Greece, of course, represented sterner opposition, and England have won seven of the 18 encounters with Ireland, with eight of them ending in a draw.
The last two meetings have seen England win to nil, and that included a 2-0 victory away to Ireland in the Nations League back in September.
To kick off my England Ireland predictions, I’m going with England to produce a rousing display at Wembley and win by two goals. This represents more value than the win to nil market, as the winning margin market has served up odds of 5/2 with Paddy Power.
England to wrap up Nations League campaign in style
England have put in the foundations for when Tuchel takes over, and this isn’t a false dawn.
As mentioned, the defeat inflicted by Greece at Wembley was a nadir, but there is plenty of talent flowing through the squad.
That includes Liverpool star Curtis Jones, who capped off a dream debut by netting with a sumptuous flick in the penalty area.
To support my earlier pick, I’m leaning into the Correct Score line. If England are to prevail by exactly two goals, I’m going with a comfortable 3-1 win, and bet365 is advertising a sumptuous price of 11/1 for that outcome.
