Keely Hodgkinson Medal Chances
Having won a silver medal at Tokyo in 2021 at just 19 years old, Hodgkinson has almost been a certainty to improve on that this time round and she could not find herself in a better position going into the final.
She will have to overcome world champion Mary Moraa if she wants to stand at the top of the podium, so the race might not be quite as forgone as the odds would suggest, but the nature of the semi-final performances have given a lot of room for optimism.
Hodgkinson was fastest overall in the semi-finals with 1:56.86, which was a full second faster than her Kenyan rival and in truth, it looked like she had barely emptied the tank while cruising round the track.
Given the form in 2024, Hodgkinson would appear to be almost nailed-on for gold on Monday night, but we have seen before that the best athletes pull it out on the big occasion. Moraa has pipped the Brit to World Championship and Commonwealth Games golds - so don’t be surprised to see her run a lot better than she did in the semi-finals.
