As Newcastle saw three points turn into one at Selhurst Park on Saturday, those who just saw the scoreline scroll on the vidiprinter may have felt that the Magpies had let an away win against Crystal Palace slip through their fingers.
However, when you dig a little deeper and look at the matchday stats between the Eagles and the Magpies, it would suggest that Daniel Munoz’s late leveller was still short of what Oliver Glasner’s men deserved just a few days ago.
Palace had no less 16 shots that afternoon, Newcastle by comparison had one and were it not for Marc Guehi putting through his own net after a well-worked freekick move, then Eddie Howe’s side would have failed to register themselves on the scoresheet.
Therefore, you could argue that even a draw flattered Saturday’s visitors and after being beaten by West Ham at the start of last week, it has been seven days or so to forget for the St James’ Park outfit.
A week that now sees the Tyneside team start this midweek schedule sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League table in 11th and although they are just a single point behind Tottenham in seventh, the race for European football is already getting rather congested.
This is a race that rewards any outfit that can win two successive league outings and punishes any that fail to do so and as Newcastle look to get a taste of that winning feeling once more, they now have to entertain those who currently sit at number one.
While Liverpool not only sit number one, they sit nine points clear of the team in second – a team that is not Manchester City after they were the latest opponent to succumb to the power of Arne Slot’s stars.
Arsenal and Chelsea both doing their best to sit on the coattails of what is looking like the runaway league leaders. Manchester City blown away after Liverpool’s display at Anfield on Sunday when the Reds strolled to a 2-0 home win.
Goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah in either half secured all three points and secured a fourth successive defeat for the defending champions. That downturn in City’s form is not of Liverpool’s concern, their only concern is making it five successive league wins this Wednesday.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with Newcastle’s downturn in attacking output, I think the visitors will take full advantage in midweek. With this in mind, I am backing Liverpool to win with a two-goal margin at odds of 4/1 with bet365.
In addition to this, I think there will be exactly 12 total corners on Wednesday. The Magpies average 6.15 per league game, the Reds 6.31 by comparison and at odds of 17/2, I think this is definitely worth some consideration before kick-off.
