Newcastle v Manchester City Match Preview
After just about catching breath from last Sunday’s super showdown at the Etihad, Manchester City are now thrust back into Premier League action this Saturday and with a trip to Newcastle on the horizon, the footballing world will be watching this game with a rather keen interest.
Not solely because these two teams always seem to serve up an entertaining 90 minutes when up against each other but also because the major plotline that is connected to the absence of City midfielder Rodri.
The Spanish international crumpled in a heap less than a week ago, the European Championship winner now out for a prolonged period of time and with this, questions are now being asked about City’s bid to defend the Premier League crown.
In fairness to the current holders, it is a massive blow but it not necessarily a crisis either. Rodri can be swapped out for Mateo Kovacic without too much of a drop off in standards and a return to winning ways at the weekend makes the absence of the Spaniard less of a talking point.
The biggest talking point to come out of the Etihad is whether Arsenal have truly gotten under the skin of the team they are looking to finally dispose of at the Premier League summit and on the evidence of last Sunday, you would have to say that maybe they have.
Now though, it will be up to Newcastle to attempt to do the same and in a weekend where they spurned the chance to temporarily go top of the table, Eddie Howe and his players will now have to put last Saturday’s defeat to Fulham behind them.
Some say it was an out of sorts performance from the Magpies, others say it has been coming due to Howe’s refusal to change personnel. Whether the reverse at Craven Cottage forces the Newcastle boss into making changes this weekend remains to be seen.
Had Newcastle won at Fulham, this upcoming fixture would be billed as an early season top of the table clash. Instead, it is one that sees the hosts in sixth with 10 points from the first 15 on offer and the visitors sitting on the highest rung of the league ladder three points better off.
Whereas City made further progress in the Carabao Cup in midweek, Newcastle were left kicking their heels due to AFC Wimbledon’s pitch being flooded. Can that enforced rest play into the hands of the home team on Saturday or will away team’s further momentum prove to be the difference?
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with their being no value in simply backing City to win at St James’ Park, there is some in backing the same outcome and both teams getting on the scoresheet – an outcome that is currently priced at odds of 7/4.
In addition to this, I think the Saturday lunchtime kickoff will give us three goals in total. With the first tip being taken into consideration. I am also going to add a 2-1 away win onto my betting slip at odds of 8/1.
