The Open 3-Ball Betting Tips - Day One

- Robert MacIntyre to beat Jon Rahm & Tommy Fleetwood
- Viktor Hovland to beat Brian Harman & Sahith Theegala
- Rory McIlroy to beat Max Homa & Tyrrell Hatton
- Xander Schauffele to beat Tiger Woods & Patrick Cantlay
It’s Open Championship week at Royal Troon, and anticipation for this event is reaching fever pitch.
The tee times have been announced for the first couple of rounds, and inevitably, some groups will grab our attention more than others.
I have cast my eye over the groups and produced four Open 3-ball betting tips to mark on your coupons for the opening round on Thursday, plus our best golf betting offers from the top online bookmakers.
The Open 3-Ball Betting Tips - Day One
Check out my four selections for the opening day at Royal Troon on Thursday, which are ideal for a 28/1 golf acca.
Robert MacIntyre to beat Jon Rahm & Tommy Fleetwood
Far from being the weak link in this grouping, Robert MacIntyre, who claimed a one-shot win at his home Scottish Open would love to complete a rare double by tying up The Open.
The victory at the Scottish Open was a landmark moment for MacIntyre, and after claiming his second PGA Tour victory in six weeks, he is ready to leave it all out on the course.
Scrambling and being immaculate off the tee is a must, and MacIntyre finds a way to grind it out.
Tommy Fleetwood is in the top 10 for scrambling stats, and we all know what Jon Rahm’s putter is like when it is red hot.
Although Fleetwood got off to an electric start when he shot 66 at Royal Liverpool last year, I expect MacIntyre to continue where he left off and lay down a marker in the first round.
Viktor Hovland to beat Brian Harman & Sahith Theegala
Brian Harman may be the reigning Open champion, but let’s not forget he was unfancied when he was assigned a big price 12 months ago.
On the other hand, Viktor Hovland appears primed to be a Major champion, and the current FedEx champion has all the tools in his locker to make some inroads.
The Norwegian, who will be making his fourth Open appearance, has had seven rounds in the sub-70s, and he’s not finished lower than T13.
His game seems to be tailor-made for the challenges of competing at the Open, and while Sahith Theegala is ranked 11th in the world, he could be put in the shade.
For my second of the Open 3-ball betting tips, I like the look of Hovland to stamp his authority in the first round.
Rory McIlroy to beat Max Homa & Tyrrell Hatton
While there will have been plenty of lingering scar tissue from the US Open where Rory McIlroy had a meltdown on the final few holes, the Ulsterman is generally a reliable performer.
Ranking first for total driving and second for strokes gained: tee to green, McIlroy will be desperate to add another Open title to his CV.
Tyrrell Hatton, at times, let his emotions get the better of him, while a T61 and T70 for Max Homa in his last two appearances on the PGA Tour makes for dispiriting reading.
McIlroy, who has had top-six finishes in six of his past eight starts at the Open since his 2014 triumph is still worth a punt in this star-studded three-ball.
Xander Schauffele to beat Tiger Woods & Patrick Cantlay
Arguably one of the most exciting groups teeing off, it will be a distinctly pan-American affair.
Tiger Woods, who will be making his first appearance on the Tour since back-to-back missed cuts at the PGA Championship and US Open, could find things hard going, and he missed the 2016 edition of the Open at Royal Troon.
Patrick Cantlay, who has only missed one cut this season, has been solid, and he is a steady hand with his approaches from 250-275 yards, ranking sixth in this particular performance metric.
Schauffele, meanwhile, has been a model of consistency, and after bagging his first major title at the PGA Championship, he knows what it takes to get over the line on the biggest stages.
A dab hand at links golf, I’m wrapping up my Open 3-ball betting tips with Schauffele to get the upper hand over Woods and Cantlay.
