All eyes are on Birmingham this weekend in a family feud for the ages
Saturday night serves up a family feud that is seldom seen in boxing.
“Bloodline” from Birmingham pits an Edwards (Sunny) against a Yafai (Galal) for the first time as professionals, and brothers of each man will be ringside to see how this long-awaited domestic encounter unfolds.
There is also plenty of action on the undercard as Kieron Conway returns to action, and Lewis Ritson attempts to rekindle some of his past form.
It’s a 14/1 shot of decision picks this week – read on to see which side of the fences we have fallen down, plus the best boxing betting offers currently available from the top betting sites.
Weekend Boxing Betting Tips
Kieron Conway to beat Ryan Kelly by Decision/Technical Decision
On paper, Conway-Kelly looks like an absolute cracker for the vacant Commonwealth title at middleweight.
Since losing to Ammo Williams in 2022, Conway has put together a good run of wins at domestic level including a trip out to Japan this summer, and looks well primed to get a win over Kelly, set miles ahead in the 160-pound rankings.
Some of Ryan Kelly’s four defeats have come at a very high level and were razor sharp on the scorecards – notably against Brad Pauls and earlier in his career against Adam Harper.
Going off records and rankings, Conway is miles ahead here, but it should be closer than the slate suggests.
Kelly is a live dog here and is a tough nut to crack in the middleweight division, but Conway should just shade it.
Conah Walker to beat Lewis Ritson by Decision/Technical Decision
There was a time where Lewis Ritson was getting pushed close to world title level in the lightweight division.
But defeats and moves up in weight – where his power hasn’t carried – has seen the “Sandman” become a B-side fighter in recent years, going 2-3 across his last five bouts.
Now up at 147-pounds, the younger, fresher Conah Walker should be able to solve the puzzle of Ritson on the scorecards.
Walker lost a tight decision over Lewis Crocker last time out, but his performance in that FOTY contender made people aware of his name.
Ritson is tough, game and will want to go out on his sword and hear the final bell – a stoppage defeat could well signal retirement for the 31-year-old.
Sunny Edwards to beat Galal Yafai by Decision/Technical Decision
This fight has been touted as a potential passing of the torch moment in the flyweight division, but there’s a suspicion that Yafai may have taken this one a shade too early.
A family feud between the Edwards’ and Yafai’s has accelerated this contest between Sunny and Galal, with Edwards the man with the pedigree having just come off a title reign for three years in the 112-pound division.
Galal Yafai is a huge prospect having secured gold at the 2021 Olympics, but perhaps is being moved too quickly in against the game, tricky 28-year-old Edwards.
Edwards’ loss to Bam Rodriguez last year was more of a reflection of Rodriguez’s talent rather than any Edwards weakness, and with the vacant interim WBO flyweight title up for grabs, we’re expecting Edwards to take another forward step back to world honours.
