2.05pm Market Rasen
The first thing to say about Market Rasen’s card this afternoon is that the advertised distances are just approximations, with the three chases on the card all being run over a furlong further than they should be as a result of rail movements.
Betty Baloo is a mare who will be winning more races this season and is one to keep on side this season. There are no prices about at the time of writing, but I will be keeping an eye on the market with regard to SEINESATIONAL, who represents the yard of Dr Richard Newland.
The stable have not had a winner in their last twenty-four runners, but this inmate made a satisfactory reappearance returning from a 423-day absence at Worcester last month over three miles. That comeback effort should put the 7-y-old spot on for today’s run, and the drop back in distance is considered a plus.
I always thought the horse was better going right-handed on the level where he currently has a mark of eighty-seven. He should be well up to winning races from a mark of 107 over timber, and the forecast good to soft ground is ideal.
3.45pm Market Rasen
I highlighted the additional race distances for today primarily because I am concerned about the extra furlong for point winner GANDHI MAKER, who would surely have won at Ayr last time had he not blundered three out when the subject of a huge gamble.
The selection has been raised 6lbs for that defeat, so you could argue he is a loser with a penalty, but he travelled like a very well-handicapped horse in Scotland and compensation awaits if his jumping holds up. In hindsight, I wonder if jockey Sam Coltherd made his bid for glory too soon last time, and his jumping was not as fluent as it might be, but he remains a potential improver, although he didn’t look to be crying out for a step up in distance last time.
1.40pm Newcastle
Good ground at Gosforth Park and little or no rain in the short-term forecast.
I hope it’s a good day for the Coltherd’s and trainer Stuart in particular, as I suggested last time that three miles on soft ground – not good to soft as per the official description - at Bangor last time was too severe a test of stamina for HIDDEN COMMANDER. This extended two-and-a-half on good ground is ideal, although he will be taken on for the lead by Road Warrior, who will have benefited from his recent comeback run at Carlisle. The selection has been dropped a couple of pounds for his Bangor run.
I am a big fan of the James Ewart-trained Empire De Maulde and the same connections have acquired his half-brother Heroique De Maulde who makes his British debut, having been last seen winning a 4-y-old Conditions Chase in the French provinces last November. He could be absolutely thrown in from a mark of 106, but his half-brother – who needs good ground – is more of a stayer, and the market should provide us with valuable clues as to stable expectations. He has been put in short enough at 2/1 with William Hill but could easily go off as short as 6/4 or as long as 6/1.
3.00pm Taunton
DANCING HARRY is a useful stayer on the flat, but he didn’t appear to get home over the extended 2m 2f at Fontwell over hurdles last time but jumped well in the lead under Harry Cobden, and I can see him going very close around the tight turns at Taunton. The ground was described as good on Wednesday morning, which is fine. He would not want soft to appear in the official description.
Cobden is claimed to ride likely market leader Rubaud who was thrown in at the deep end on his British debut in the G2 Adonis Juvenile Hurdle when showing little. Paul Nicholls immediately had the wind of his French import operated on. Nicholls suggested in a recent stable tour of the 4-y-old a useful stayer on the level; “I’ll be expecting a big run when he reappears next week.”
He looks sure to go off a short price given the tremendous form of the yard, and Cobden should know where he stands with regard to the selection, who I hope will be an each-way price if the layers are wary of the Nicholls horse.
7.00pm Chelmsford
I think the valuable 1m 6f handicap at Chelmsford this evening revolves around whether WAGGA WAGGA settles better than was the case at Newbury last time when he pulled like a train when looking to land a hat-trick back in August.
He has been gelded in the interim period, which might make him concentrate more. He only beat two home on his sole previous all-weather start, but that was when a 66/1 shot for a mile Lingfield maiden as a juvenile. With Richard Kingscote having the day off, David Probert takes over in the saddle for Hughie Morrison. His draw in five is not ideal but should not be considered a negative.
