Albania are set to feature at a European Championships for only the second time, eight years after making their debut in France, aiming to add to their sole major tournament victory so far, beating Romania 1-0 in Lyon back in 2016.

That said, the Black and Reds do face an uphill battle, having very much landed in the group of death, but Sylvinho’s side will be no push-overs, and here is everything you need to know about Albania at Euro 2024.

Albania Euro 2024 Top Tip

Albania are massive underdogs to get out of Group B, given that they find themselves alongside three of the tournament’s heavyweights.

Without wanting to write them off unfairly, they’ll do well to win a single game, let alone advance to the knockout stages for the very first time.

Albania’s Road to Qualification

When the qualification draw was made all the way back in October 2022, few were expecting Albania to achieve a top two finish, with regular qualifiers Czechia and Poland the obvious front-runners.

Everything was going to script when the Red and Blacks were beaten 1-0 in Warsaw to begin their campaign, but that would prove to be their sole defeat of 2023. Sylvinho’s side pinched a point in Prague, before beating both heavyweights in Tirana, defeating Poland 2-0 in September before hammering Czechia 3-0 a month later.

So, despite only yielding draws from their November double-header with Moldova and Faroe Islands, the Eagles had already done enough not only to qualify, but do so in first place. Sylvinho, alongside assistants Pablo Zabaleta and Doriva, appeared to be a curious choice for a management team, but they’ve delivered above and beyond expectations.

Albania upset the odds just to be here, but an even greater challenge awaits them once they land in Germany.

Albania’s Key Players

Berat Gjimshiti - Berat Gjimshiti will captain his country at the European Championships this summer, with the 31-year-old, who actually represented Switzerland, the country of his birth, at youth level, adding to his 55 caps.

The centre-back joined Atalanta from home-town club Zürich in 2016, making 222 appearances for la Dea to date, a key figure in the team that qualified for the Champions League in three successive seasons and also reached two Coppa Italia Finals. He started seven of the eight qualifiers, predominantly alongside Ardian Ismajli, and will be key to any success his team have, given that they’ll be defending for the majority of the time.

Kristjan Asllani - Another Serie A player, over a third of the squad are likely to be based in Italy, is Inter Milan midfielder Kristjan Asllani.

The 22-year-old has earned 16 caps since making his debut in March 2022, scoring his first goal in a friendly win over Armenia, before also netting at Torsvollur against the Faroes during qualifying. Asllani is this team’s most technically gifted and creative midfielder, so they’ll need him to be at his best.

Jasir Asani - Lastly, there won’t be many K-League based players at this Euros, although there is still time for Jesse Lingard to force his way in.

Striker Jasir Asani is very much a journeyman, winning league titles in Macedonia and Albania, before brief stints in Sweden and Hungary, plying his trade with Gwangju FC in South Korea for the last 12 months or so.

The 28-year-old only made his national team debut in March 2023, but proved to be a crucial figure during qualifying, breaking the deadlock in the home wins over Moldova, Poland and Czechia, with his goals when the Poles visited Tirana an absolute screamer. Asani may not be the most high-profile member of this squad, but he certainly has the ability to be a key figure in attack.
