Hungary′s Road to Qualification
For the first time since World Cup 1966, Hungary have qualified for a major tournament unbeaten, looking generally impressive throughout 2023.
Marco Rossi’s side ended up clear at the top of Group G, four points clear of second and a whopping seven points above third.
The Magyars won all four matches in Budapest, scoring ten times, whilst also beating second-placed Serbia both home and away, prevailing 2-1 at both the Marakana and then the Puskás Aréna.
This team’s most eye-catching recent results came back in 2022, competing in Nations League A for the very first time and, despite being drawn into a group of death, they only narrowly missed out on a place in the finals.
Hungary beat England home and away, 1-0 at home and then 4-0 at Molineux, this the Three Lions’ heaviest home defeat since 1928, whilst also defeating Germany 1-0 in Leipzig.
Overall, this side are now unbeaten in 14, losing only three of their last 25, momentum they’ll be looking to carry with them to Germany.

Hungary’s Key Players
Willi Orban- Hungary’s strength comes from their spine, with centre-back Willi Orbán very much key in that regard. Born in Germany to a Hungarian father and Polish mother, he was a latecomer to senior international football, pledging his allegiance to Hungary in 2018 before swiftly debuting days later, accumulating 43 caps subsequently, starting all three matches at Euro 2020.
He sat out a large chunk of this season with RB Leipzig, due to a torn lateral knee ligament, before returning in late-January, which is a major boost for his nation, set to start as the middle-man, alongside Attila Szalai and Ádám Lang, at the back this summer.
Dominik Szoboszlai- The undisputed star of this team, and by some distance their most-recognisable player, is midfielder and captain Dominik Szoboszlai. His form in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig saw Liverpool pay his €70 million release clause last summer and he has impressed in his debut season.
For his nation, Szoboszlai debuted at senior level against Slovakia in 2019, making 40 appearances and scoring 12 goals to date, renowned for free-kick goals, have scored directly from a dead-ball against Bulgaria in qualifying, whilst also doing so twice at Türkiye’s expense, one of which came as recently as March.
Roland Sallai- The joint-top scorer in this squad is Roland Sallai, who’s also netted 12 times for the Magyars to date, most-memorable bagging a brace as his side crushed England 4-0 two summers ago.
In Marco Rossi’s 3-4-2-1, Sallai and Szoboszlai are deployed as the dual-number tens, in support of a facilitating target man, either Martin Ádám or Krisztofer Horváth.
At club level, after spells with Puskás Akadémia, Palermo and APOEL Nicosia, Sallai has really found a home in Freiburg, scoring 27 goals in 156 appearances for Breisgau-Brasilianer, making him one of the unsung stars of the Bundesliga.
